Point cloud to Inventor

Hi Support,

   I am using IV2025. I have query regarding point cloud data to be imported to Inventor for modelling and detailing. I checked on the google and it says you need to export as obj file and then recap and import in inventor. Before i can commit to them, that i can do this, i like to be doubly assured. 

In the past, i had issues exporting models from Revit to Inventor, ultimately ended up drawing from scratch. Besides the number of steps involved, i want to know the system requirement for such big projects. 

Will my system be able to handle it or will it crash? My current RAM is attached. Do i need to find out the file size of cloud point from client? 

Mine is Windows 10 Pro laptop. 

Any help will be appreciated.

Is the point cloud already in RVT? Can you just import that file? I've not tried that before to see it if it works. 

Otherwise just import the cloud directly into Inventor using the Attach command. I think it needs to be a Recap file like you say.

Hi @SharkDesign 

I dont know the format of the point cloud and they have not sent. Its just an enquiry to check if my comp / laptop is able to take it ? I have enquired them about size. Its 3D scanning file not model directly. How can you convert 3D scan into Inventor model? Once i hear back from them about file size, i will let you know.

Recap can import all these:

You can then save as RCP file and bring into Inventor. 

If you have manufacturing collection, recap is included.

Hi! You don't need to convert the point cloud to a mesh. You can simply attach rcp or rcs point cloud to a part/assembly. On Inventor 2027, there are quite a few point cloud related enhancements, streamlining the Inventor workflows.
