I don't know about Inventor, but I do know about pointclouds.
If the original scan is lacking data density, then you can't do anything about it.
The point density is quite different between scanner types.
For example: If you scan w/a Lidar scanner (meant for landscapes), your point cloud will be much less dense than if you scan w/a handheld scanner (meant for complex surfaces). You can read about the specs on the various scanner web sites, such as Faro, Romer, Leica, etc.
Another example: A guy scanned a vehicle for me using a Lidar scanner. I needed to RE the body parts. But when I tried using that scan data to do the surfacing I found it was not dense enough to get any kind of reliable detail of the surfaces. The guy scanned the whole truck too, and it was a HUGE pointcloud, and it took him a number of hours to do it. But the pointcloud was totally unusable b/c it was just too low in resolution. The correct scanner to use would have been a handheld scanner, like the Creaform 700. I've seen guys use on vehicle bodies that with excellent results.
So if it was me, I'd find out what kind of scanner did the scan, and what resolution they used to do it. If it is too low, then maybe they can do it again at a higher resolution?
