Physical Location request by Autodesk save to Web and Mobile

Hi everyone,

I’m wondering if this is normal. It seems like Autodesk is frequently trying to track my location. Over a 7-day period, my PC logged more than 10,000 location requests from the Autodesk Save to Web feature.

I’m using Inventor 2024 with the current update, but the software has been crashing regularly, and the crashes don’t seem tied to any specific model I’m working on. For example, I’ve walked away to get a coffee, only to come back and find Inventor has crashed. It has also crashed while saving, which has caused significant issues.

In one instance, I lost several days of work. I had completed assemblies and drawings, saved the files, and checked them into Vault. Despite this, the master model from Vault became corrupted. I couldn’t locate any backup copies of the master file in the old version folder.

Has anyone else experienced similar problems with Inventor 2024? Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Roddo

Hi! This could be related to the Autodesk Licensing Service. The service needs to track the usage in order to ensure license compliance.

Many thanks!

Hi,

Thanks for the info. Do you think it needs to check every second? seems to be excessive. Also, is this the reason why my inventor crashed every time my pc goes to sleep at the end of the day?

Cheers

Hi! Again, this could be related to Autodesk Licensing service. Please make sure all critical Windows updates are installed and the graphics driver is updated. Then install the latest update to the Inventor release you are running. If the issue persists, maybe you need to install the latest Autodesk Licensing Service update.

Just to actually answer, in case someone else comes across this:

Autodesk Save to Web and Mobile allows you to save AutoCAD drawings to cloud storage associated with your Autodesk account.

I only have Inventor, AutoCAD and Mechanical, so I'm not sure what other products this affects. I did find it in AutoCAD and Mechanical but not in Inventor. Even if you aren't in any of them, for some reason it needs to check on your physical location every 30 seconds. (Maybe someone got into one of them while setting up my computer, but I only ever ran AutoCAD and Mechanical to try to find the actual "Drawing to AutoCAD Web & Mobile" button under Save As so it looks as though the programs that use them don't ever even have to have been run.)

I wish I knew what Autodesk is doing with the data on the location of every computer that has Autodesk software installed for each and every thirty seconds that those computers are on. Even if they only keep that information for a few days at a time, the data centers to store it must be enormous!

In Windows 11 it is able to be uninstalled from your "Installed Apps" under Settings, but it was apparently hidden in earlier OSs and you needed to go monkeying around in the Registry to try to get rid of it: https://www.autodesk.com/support/technical/article/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Remove-Autodesk-Sa...

Well, now it seems that it may not have been "hidden" in earlier OSs, it appears that the reason that it was not visible may be that it was "uninstalled" so that windows believes that it is no longer there but that might not be stopping it from continuing to run.

I uninstalled it and it seemed to be running still for a little while as I intermittently hovered over the arrow ((I couldn't catch it every time) but eventually it started showing as REX Inventor instead.

Hi Dan,

At my workplace, the IT dept took control of all the updates and installation. So, it is impossible for me to tweak the pc. Honestly, it doesn't bother me, I just can't understand why the frequency of the data is so excessive.
