Part not aligned with origin planes

Anonymous

I've put a lot of work into designing a part, and now I export to STL for 3d printing, but when I open via my 3d printing software, it is skewed.  Analizing the model, I find that the part is not aligned to the origin planes.  I have no idea how that happened.  I open the first sketch, and the origin for that checks out, but this doesn't seem to have any effect in regard to the global origin.  Help is much appreciated.

It's not really possible to diagnose this without seeing the part.  We would just be offering wild guesses.  Can you post the part for someone to take a look at it?

If it's too proprietary to share, then I'm not sure what help we'll be able to be.

Hi ccut93,

My guess is that you have an instance of what Johnson Shiue describes at this link, going on:

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/inventor-forum/a-problem-with-orientation/m-p/6682833#M620061

I hope this helps.
Best of luck to you in all of your Inventor pursuits,

Hi! This mostly happens either the designer chose the wrong datum plane or the part was designed in the context of an assembly. Anyway, you can fix it by doing one of the followings.

1) Open the part and go to 3D Print environment. Use Set Orientation command to push the body to the print floor.

2) Or without going to 3D Print environment, use Direct Edit command -> Move or Rotate -> Bodies -> drag the body so that it is aligned to the origin planes.

3) Or, place the part in an assembly. Unground the part. Use assembly constraints to align the body to the assembly origin planes. Save the assembly. Derive the assembly as a part.

Many thanks!
