Parametric Spur Gears Design

Hi,

I have designed a set of spur gears (driver and driven), and the design works perfectly. In the Spur Gears Component Generator, I have selected "Module" as the Design Output, since I know the following key inputs:

  1. Desired gear ratio (Driven Diameter / Driver Diameter),
  2. Center-to-center distance,
  3. Number of teeth on the driver gear.

I chose this method because we have an existing design from an older machine and want to scale it for a new machine (either larger or smaller). However, we want to retain the driver gear from the original design and generate a new driven gear to match the new parameters.

The new design is parametric. I have created a "DATA" file (a model with no features), where I define all the parameters needed for the machine, such as dimensions, thicknesses, distances, and quantities. All components, assemblies, and sheet metal parts are linked to this "DATA" file, so changing any parameter in the "DATA" file automatically updates the entire machine design.

The Challenge: I need to connect the driven gear to the "DATA" file to automatically update its design when I change relevant parameters in "DATA." However, I understand that the Spur Gears Component Generator requires manual input for its fields and does not allow me to link these fields directly to parameters defined in the "DATA" file using the "List Parameter" feature.

My Question: Is there a solution or workaround to link the fields in the Spur Gears Component Generator (e.g., number of teeth, module, etc.) to external parameters from the "DATA" file, so the driven gear updates automatically in a parametric workflow?

Any insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi

The gear parameters are saved directly in the component files (ipt) of the gears. They are not in the assembly file. You can try to link the DATA file parameters directly to the components. This must be done in parallel for both gears.

Be sure to make a backup before experimenting. This is not a standard workflow in Inventor.
