Option to Rotate with Middle mouse

Multiple suggested workarounds --- but this would be doable in software API option in probably less than an hour if Autodesk just decided to do it.  I know it's not how the want to do it but it would make our miserable lives easier if they just did it.

Hi Pete,

This topic has been discussed on and off for a quite while, particularly from SWX users. I agree it would be nice to have such options to remap these keys. But, if I recall correctly, the behavior is consistent across major Autodesk products. Some users suggested you could use X-Mouse to reconfigure keys. I have not used it before so I don't know how well it works.

Regarding changing the behavior or allowing customization, it is interesting idea. But, it is not something trivial to change. There is a lot of consideration required beyond the code change itself. If you know how to do it in an hour, I am more than happy to learn from you.

Many thanks!

We do coding for industrial control systems.... Some of our customer think changing code is trivial.
Point taken but you've got some sharp folks; I don't understand the dependencies but if you can click on 3D Cube to trigger an event, why not trigger same event/function with a key mouse combination (doesn't have to be middle mouse button).
Cheers.

Hmm...

How about to replace a new mouse and have another try?

Not entirely; Fusion has the ability to use MMB (middle mouse button) as rotate like SWX.

Also, comparing to something like AutoCAD is a questionable comparison. AutoCAD is mainly for 2D, so it makes sense for the MMB to perform a 2D camera movement (Pan). But Inventor is a 3D software. It would make sense for the MMB to perform a 3D camera movement (Rotate). And it does... in SolidWorks, Creo, Solid Edge, SketchUp, Fusion, etc. etc...

This does not work well. It causes unfavorable regressions in other behaviors associated with the MMB.

Regarding the underlying code, Shift+MMB is Orbit in the Inventor part/assembly environments, but it's Pan in the drawing environment. So this gives some hope that maybe the MMB bindings aren't entrenched too terribly deep in Inventor's code, and providing customization for the MMB action may be feasible.

It is not a SWX thing.

Long time ago Inventor allow rotate while holding down mouse button.

I don't remember which one.  Might be the middle one.

It was done before so it can be done again.

This thing solves a lot of navigation problems. There's a bit of a learning curve, but it's totally worth it. I myself use the Enterprise Kit, and with all the custom shortcuts, I bet I save 30 minutes a day of hunting and pecking. Best $450 a designer can spend.

@tdant, this discussion is primarily in consideration of those who don't like, can't afford, or sometimes have to work without a 3D mouse. And those who are just getting into Inventor and 3D CAD and aren't ready to make the investment.

EDIT: By "this discussion" I also meant the discussion at this Idea, which has been the hub for this issue for several years.
