It was my impression that the translator in inventor can open a solid works part SLDPRT file?

Inventor will open SolidWorks assembly files and part files.

But you left out absolutely critical information.

What version of Inventor?

What version of SolidWorks?

Q1. Did you know that you cannot open an Inventor 2015 file in Inventor 2014?

You also cannot open a SolidWorks 2015 file in SolidWorks 2014.

SolidWorks is released after Inventor, so, you cannot open a SolidWorks 2014 file in Inventor 2014.

Using Inventor 2014 you could only open a SolidWorks 2013 or earlier file.

In the future I would ask for a neutral format like STEP.

You could download a trial of Inventor 2016 or I think Fusion 360 will also open *.sldprt files and Save As *.stp

or

you could attach the file here and see if someone can convert it to STEP for you.

Hi WILLIAMF,

Inventor 2014 can only support to read Solidworks 2013 version. You can share your Solidworks file here or send them to me via Hongyuan.Li@autodesk.com , I will double check the Solidworks version and send STEP file to you if possible.

For my own knowledge... With INV 2016 having this "Any CAD" functionality do the same restrictions still apply?

In that Inv 2016 even with "Any CAD" still cannot open a Solidworks 2016 file natively?

The SW files opened with INV2015

I was trying it with my 2014 INV at home to no avail.

I may as well load up 2016 since I have it

All good now

Thanks

So I'll take that as a "NO"...  and that the same rules still apply in that you can open files from previous versions and not from the same year

That showed up this morning at the office, too.  Not sure why though - I cancelled my company Solidworks subscription back in December when I got the company to switch to Autodesk.

Hi mcgyvr,

Same rule is still here, says Inventor 2016 with ANYCAD cannot open a Solidworks 2016 file.
