Open future versions of STEP

There are several versions of STEP files at the moment (203, 214, 242).

If I stay on Inventor 2018 for some time, is it possible, that future releases of Inventor can generate STEP file  versions, which cannot be openened with Inventor 2018?

Not likely that newer versions of STEP will be supported on 2018..

If its not supported now.. Its unlikely to change..

I have never ever had a case where a STEP file will not open because of a versioning issue?

I did not have any issues myself, but I was wondering if this might be possible, or is the STEP format really universal?

Hi Brian,

One never knows! I cannot say it for sure it will be supported or not on any given release. But, look at 2017. It was shipped without Future CAD support. Then on R4 Update, it is Future CAD enabled (the ability to reference 2018 files). All I can say is that there is intention to keep interop workflows reasonably up-to-date.

Many thanks!

Sure... 2017 is still fairly new (and still being updated) and 2018 just came out..

But the OP seemed to indicate a longer time span as they want to stay on 2018 for years as they stated "If I stay on Inventor 2018 for some time"  (of course I'm assuming "for some time" is more than just a year or 2).. Like when INV 2022 comes out and STEP 282 (or whatever new version they may make) comes out I do not see Autodesk going back and updating 2017 in anyway..

You didn't update 2016 with "Future CAD" support did you ?

Is Inventor 2015 fully compatible (and supported) on Windows 10? Nope... Smiley Wink

A year or 2.. Sure... But more than that... HIGHLY doubt it..

I don't like putting false hope into their heads..
