Open and Save box 'enhancement' - Inventor 2026

The new enhanced open/save box is prettier, but I can't seem to be able to get my sorting options to stick. By default, it sorts by name (A-Z) as we all know. At times, I need to sort by date modified or type depending on what I'm doing. 2025 my sorting selection would stick for at least the session, but now it will always revert back to name A-Z. Has the box been enhanced to only allow name A-Z to stick as the sorting method, am I missing something or is this a bug?

You are wrong for thinking that the way Autodesk wants to do it is not the best way. You just wait until it starts reverting some of your other silly preferences!

We need a sort of "Quality of Life" Ideas forum so that "little" things like this don't get lost or crowd out other issues.

(It's probably some tiny change and some coder said, "Oh yeah, it'll take me like 5 seconds to fix." but they never get around to it and nobody mentions it for a while and then it's, "Oh, didn't that get fixed? Give me a sec and I'll get right on it."  and then some time later, "What? No, that's done, isn't it?" and eventually everyone is so used to dealing with it that it hardly even comes up anymore.)

Hi, can you share some screen shots or a short video of what it is you're seeing?  Is it changing only between sessions or files, or is it changing each time you close and reopen the file window?  I'd like to see what you are seeing, and try to replicate it on my screen.

Hi Chris,

It's just the new open/save box as shown below. It sorts by name (as shown). In all previous versions I can remember, if I sorted by a different field (date modified for example), it would remember that choice for the remainder of the session. Now, it will just revert back to sort by name.

Thanks for the image.  I'm not able to reproduce it on my end.  This is essentially a Windows Explorer window now.  I have mine set to "Details" and I am able to sort by any of the visible columns, open a file. When I return to the Open command the sorting is still as it was in the last use.  This is odd.

Hi Chris,

I have it set to details as well, and even if I sort using date and open a file, even if I immediately go back to the open window, it has changed back to sort by name. I'll add it's Inventor 2026.1 build 233 I'm on as well. Guess it just looks like another enhancement that has added an extra step to my workflow, not much can be done about it except wait for how Inventor can be made even less user-friendly.

Thanks

Andrew.

@johnsonshiue are you able to test this workflow to see if you can reproduce what @andrew4WQQV is seeing?

Hi! I have worked with the project team to understand the issue better. The behaviors may seem random at time. It could be related to a registry key. Please try the following and see if it helps.

Close Inventor. Launch Regedit.exe. Find the following key and delete it.

“HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags”

Many thanks!

The issue came back and the previous fix now doesn't seem to be working.

Is it possible the registry key got restored?

Many thanks!

Hi Johnson, as I said it did get restored. My opinion is that any software that requires you to regularly delete things from the registry hasn't been writen properly. Adobe has the same issue with one of it's features.
