Hi Mike,

The answer is yes and no. It depends on what kind of edit you are looking for. If you want to open AutoCAD dwg file in Inventor and edit in the way like in AutoCAD, such edit workflows do not exist. Inventor is not AutoCAD. If you want to leverage geometry in an AutoCAD dwg file, you can import or link to the dwg file in Inventor and then create more geometry. You can still open an AutoCAD dwg file. It is mainly for viewing purpose.

The best tool to edit and create dwg file is AutoCAD. Nothing compares. May I ask why you want to edit AutoCAD dwg file in Inventor?

Many thanks!

Is this a 2D drawing or is it a 3D solid?

If it is a 3D solid - then Import into Inventor and you can edit just like you would in AutoCAD.

I was previously using auto cad mechanical. Changed to design suite. I can just use the autocad program in the suite to open cad drawings.

how do you leverage geometry or add to the imported dwg file?

You could use the AutoCAD drawing as ANYCAD underlay and project geometry from it.

Not sure if this would help what you're trying to accomplish but https://synergiscadblog.com/2015/06/16/turning-2d-flat-geometry-into-3d-2/

Hi! Like Marked mentioned here, the workflow is called Inventor DWG Underlay. Please take a look at the following page for more information. If you still cannot figure it out, please share an example here so forum experts can take a look.

I imported a facility layout from ACAD to Inventor so I can add more equipment to the layout. Upon opening the exported DWG in Inventor, everything in the Sketch, Annotate, and Place Views tabs are grayed out and cannot be selected.

Hi! I believe you "open" the dwg, instead of linking or importing the dwg file. When the dwg file is "opened" in Inventor, Inventor is like a viewer. Editing the dwg file is not allowed. You need to edit the file in AutoCAD.

Many thanks!
