not responding message

I keep getting the 'Not Responding' message a lot.  Random repeat on different commands.  Running Inventor Pro 2016 with CAM.  Takes up a lot of class time during demonstrations.   Very infuriating.

Welcome to the forums, RaymondSmith!

Typically it helps if you let us know what your system specs are.

The "not responding" message is not a true assessment; it just means the program is processing/running something generally.  On large assemblies or files (IE scan point-cloud data) the not responding message appears frequently, but will go away once everything is loaded or the command completes, etc.

Video cards and outdated drivers are often culprits of lagging systems.  You mention class time; are you running a laptop or desktop?  Running a projector puts a drain on a video card, too, if you are doing demonstrations this way.  I found the presentation worked fine on my laptop, but when I hooked to a projector it was much slower, etc.  Making a video of your demonstration instead of real-time may help in this situation.

I also tend to run two versions of Inventor on my desktop; I won't have the same assembly open, but I might have a sub-assembly and the full assembly open.  Then I just bounce between software as one "not responding" message appears.  Since Inventor runs single core, this works well on a multi-core machine.

Hope this helps,

Kenny

I am running on a Dell Precision M6800 with quad xenon processors with 32
gb of ram.
Yes I am connected to a projector but the problem exists even when the
projector is not connected.
I am performing a step by step illustration of how to do. Video would not
lend itself to this class.
I am not running multiple versions or several files at once, usually I am
running the model along with a drawing or assembly.

Hi Raymond,

Yes - your machine should be capable.  I would suspect then either an interfering software (anti-virus scanner, etc. or similar from the school), outdated driver(s) or a need for a reinstall.  Can you run the software in administrator mode and see if it still lags?

Does file size or complexity matter?  Can you run the command with a single part in the assembly but not when it is the full assembly for example?  Does it fail on multiple parts?  Are the parts older parts that have been upgraded or were they made in the current version?  Are the parts and files local to the machine or across a network?

Does it work from the student stations?  I found that as a teacher, my login loaded more "junk" than the students in the background.  Sometimes I would log in as a student to do tasks for faster load/login, etc.  (plus not having to worry about leaving my station up as I worked with students).

I used to do the step-by-step method; it was my preferred method, too.  If you know a common hang, a work-around is to have two versions of your project open (in two separate Inventors).  A pre command and a post command; if the demo works, you keep going.  If it hangs, you jump to the second running version of Inventor and carry on.  LOL  (I used to do this with Max all the time to save the class time).  Not a solution to the situation, but a Band-Aid.

Just bouncing some thoughts around in the hopes of hitting something that helps...

I am having the same issue, with basically the same machine:

M6800

K5100M video card 8gb dedicated video ram

500gb SSD program drive

500gb 5400rpm data drive

32gb ram

Happens with no parts loaded (after a restart)

Happens with very simple parts

Happens with complex parts

The "Not Responding" can take up to 2 minutes to clear then might only get 10 seconds before it happens again.
