New sketch on XZ Plane - puts me on wrong side

When I pick the XZ plane to create a new sketch, then Look At it, the red
origin indicator is pointing left, meaning I'm on the back side. How did I
get over on the front side. Something with flip axis or something like that?

right click on the plane and choose "flip normal". then do the look at
again

I don't think you can "flip normal" on the origin planes.

Please don't tell me I have to create "dummy" offset 0 workplane off the XZ
plane and base a sketch off of that?!?!? It's the only way I can see to do
it.

It is a conspiracy to find out how many people use the tabs in the
Extrusion dialog to find the "alternate solution" switch.

Seriously, the wacked way the "normals" of the origin planes behave (try
to figure them out-it's a good 3Dspacial relations excercise) are due to
the modelling kernal and the way it percieves "surface" U & V vectors.
Even with mapping the "surface" normals to the XY "solid" normals, it is
still wacked, IMO.

You can extrude any direction, try selecting the view orientation you want
with the common view box. Then sketch looking from the other side.

Thanks Matt, but not really cuz I was inserting an AutoCAD drawing as a
sketch and it sticks it in backwards. So I either mirror the sketch in
AutoCAD first before I insert, or create the dummy workplane with the normal
flipped (which is what I chose to do).

Use heavy caution when flipping planes.

Try to imagine what happens if they ever decide to normalize themselves.
It is kinda like constraining in a sheetmetal part, then going back in
and reversing the extrustion/face direction of the part. All of a sudden
you are standing there wearing your skin on the inside while you bleed
to death trying to pick up your internal organs off the floor.

Captian Archer risks this if he goes any deeper into the expanse.

I have not been able to duplicate this.... are you using a default
template, or one you have created?

Here's what I tried...

1. Set Tools > App Options > Part to Sketch on XZ Plane. Open
standard.ipt. Do Look at and select XZ from Origins. + Z is coming
towards me, with Xaxis (red) to the right, and extrude default always
goes in the +Z direction.

2. Set Tools > App Options > Part to Sketch on XY Plane(Default). Open
standard.ipt. Close and delete original sketch. Create New Sketch on XZ
Plane. Do Look at and select XZ from Origins.
+ Z is coming towards me, with Xaxis (red) to the right, and extrude
default always goes in the +Z

What are you doing differently?

The sketch I am doing is the second in the part. I start off on sketching on
the xy plane. Then when I select the XZ plane, that's when it does it. I
don't wish to begin my part on the XZ plane.

Try this:
1. Start a new part, sketch and extrude a simple shape on the XY plane.
2. Select the XZ plane in the origin folder, create a new sketch.
3. Bingo.

What is the possibility of them normalizing on their own without
intervention? Say when you upgrade to 8??

I just found I had to sketch on the XY plane. Now that one does it right -
the Y indicator points to the right!!! Wierd.

It does happen... and upgrades are a VERY nervous time when it comes to
migrating stuff over.

This issue is still not fixed in Inventor 2013.

Maybe this helps, you can change you're front by right clicking the cube(with the views front,back,right,etc on it) in the right-corner or reset yout front, the x,y,z axis will also change.

Resetting the cube front doesn't make any difference if you want to sketch on the XZ plane.  You can see in the pic below the part X axis is pointing left, the sketch x axis is pointing right and the cube has spun to show back.  I don't know what's more ridiculous, the fact that Inventor does this or that fact that it hasn't been addressed in the 9 years since the OP.
