We are going to buy new laptops for our Inventor projects work and some Plant3D. The Inventor projects are very big +10.000 parts.

Will this videocard do for big assemblies?

Inventor really doesn't use the GPU. It's primary based on CPU. This is true for renderings aswell.

Hi @johan.degreef,

The card looks to be fine - the rule of thumb is that for more than 100K parts you need more than 8GB of VRAM, if run at 4K you will need more VRAM. If you want a really detailed understanding then Neil (TFI) has made an AU class on the topic of hardware for Inventor: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvPX0BxljW4

@habibhamza753 You are sort of right in that Inventor doesn't use the GPU (the graphics processor) which is true - Inventor is not GPU Compute Accelerated however Inventor does need VRAM meaning you cannot disregard the GPU (graphics card) completely.

@leowarren34 True, but I do think Inventor needs to fully integrate the GPU in renderings and calculations since most GPUs have CUDA/Stream cores that accelerate in these type of tasks (NVIDIA or AMD).

@habibhamza753 @leowarren34

The laptops will have this CPU inside:

and an NVIDIA QUADRO RTX3000

Hi @johan.degreef,

Overall the processor is alright - the base clock is on the lower side which may be more noticeable when multitasking with programs other than Inventor. The turbo speed is great - however do be aware that turbo can be affected by cooling and power so you may not get full speeds for too long depending on your setup. I would have a look at Plant3D requirements in case they are substantially different from Inventor.

Inventor is single-threaded for the most part (so high turbo speed is very important) so unless you use the few multi-threaded workflows inside Inventor the additional cores may not be of too much benefit - just to make you aware. However, having a few spare cores is great for background tasks so Inventor isn't having to share as much.

Hi! Please see the list of Inventor operations supporting multi-core/multi-threading.

Many thanks!

@johnsonshiue This further highlights the problem. While the things listed are important functions, Inventor needs to integrate more useful uses for multicore such as dynamic simulation and FEAs. It's common knowledge that not everyone has a CPU which can do 5.3 GHz on a single core, so why isn't there multicore functionality on such uses?

Thanks

Hi! Absolutely! The more usage of MT/MC, the better. But, there are certain operations in Inventor are genetically sequential, which cannot be made MT/MC enabled.

Stress Analysis and Inventor NASTRAN are already MT/MC enabled. Dynamic Simulation is not. One thing you may consider exploring is to leverage simulation in the cloud (Fusion Simulation). You will not be bounded by your hardware. You can focus on the design tasks. For the intensive compute, send it to the cloud.

Many thanks!

@johnsonshiue I see. I have a dynamic simulation which took over 20 minutes and counting and has still not finished. I'll attach the assembly below. Is there any way Autodesk could implement a cloud solution for Dynamic Simulation or is there any way I could run the simulation faster?

Thanks

Hi! I am not aware of a plan to make Inventor Dynamic Simulation MT/MC enabled in the short term. If there is strong demand for that, it might be possible in the future.

Many thanks!
