Need help w/ file conversion DWG to STP/STEP

Hi everybody,

I apologize in advance because I've seen a similar post around, but it has a fixed file, and not instructions on how to do it. I was hoping to find a kind samaritan to help me convert an AutoCAD .dwg to an .stp or .step. My designer who created .dwg file says he cant find a way to make the .stp. I've tried around 10 tricks and cant seem to find anything that works.

I have zero experience with AutoCAD so, suffice to say, I figured it couldn't hurt to ask the experts. I tried to convert this myself using FreeCAD with a tutorial I found on Google but I simply have no idea what I'm doing and, from what I've read on these boards, this seems to be a relatively simple export for somebody that does.

If i could get some help on how to do it step by step it would me amazing. I cant publish the file because it has a patent pending process.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your consideration,

Veronica

Hi there and welcome to this forum.
To convert an dwg to a step file in AutoCAD you can use the command stepout.

Must have AutoCAD Mechanical or Inventor to save dwg as STEP.

Is the "Autocad" file just a 2d (2 dimension) drawing?

And you need STP/STEP to have a 3d (3 dimension) file?

You can send the file to me if you would like and I'd be happy to take a look and see what I can do..

If the drawing is going to take time to convert to 3d are you willing to pay for my time spent?

Hi mcgyvr! thanks so much for you offer, but i just got it to work!

it was a 3D file... had it in .igs and .dwg

If someone else is reading and wants intructions, what I did was download Inventor 2018 and followed directions from some dark-corner-of-the-internet forum.

On Inventor, open the .igs file (it took a really long time for me, not sure if its normal...but so long that i even considered force quitting and re-opening. Just wait for it). Once its open, file > 'save as copy", and then it'll give you the option to do .stp

Hope this can help if need be!
