Model slice without apparent reason

Hi guys,

I've seen this behaviour with a couple of colleagues of mine and now it happened to me too.

It only happens since we are working with Inventor 2016.

Take a look at the screencast, the model is sliced over a ghost plane when rotating.

It happens occasionally and it doesn't matter if it's a big model or small like the one in the screencast.

Also, when I close the model and open it again it's fine again.

I thought it might have something to do with the framerate and adjusting the slider in the application options does instantly solve the problem for that time but it doesn't matter what setting it is in, it will reoccur.

The weird thing is that it happens to allot of colleagues of mine which all have different computers with different settings.

So there are computers with hardware settings to performance and a high minimum frame rate and computers with quality settings and a low minimum frame rate.

We also have different graphic cards on which it occurs, from Quadro K6000 to K2000 but also Firepro and geforce GTX.

Any Ideas?

Can you post that iam file (and included ipt files)?

How large is that object? (I thought Inventor is limited to something like 100000mm^3)

Hi mcgyvr,

The model is about 6000mm long so no problem there.

And it doesn't matter what kind of model it is, it happens occasionally with whatever model.

Close the model, open it again and everything is fine again.

The model in the screencast is just another example, I can't recreate the problem because it's working fine now.

Nobody else have seen this in Inventor 2016?

I've never had/seen that but my parts aren't even close to that size..

It really seems like thats part of the issue.. Its just clipping anything outside of some circle..

Hi Frank-Oosterwaal,

Another user called @Anonymous had what I think is the same issue, as discussed on this thread, but I don't see a solution posted:

I hope this helps.
Best of luck to you in all of your Inventor pursuits,
Curtis

Hi Curtis,

I've seen the post and as suggested there already updated all systems with the latest drivers and all systems are running on the latest Inventor updates.

The really weird part is that it's not restricted to one kind of graphics card.

Hi Frank,
Thanks for reporting this issue! Would you please help provide below information for us to diagnose the problem?
1. Inventor version, do you run against Inventor RTM build, or SP1/R2? You could check from Help->About, then get the inventor build number from there.
2. When you encounter the problem, could you recall what operations have you done against the assembly? (such as, section view, express mode, etc.) It will be good for us to understand the problem by providing as many hints as you can.

Thanks,
-Lisa

Hi Lisa,

  1. Build: 210, Release: 2016 SP 1 update 1 (Latest Inventor Update installed is: update 1 for Inventor Professional R2 64-bit)
  2. Express mode is off and there is no special operations I do. It just pops up every now and again. Once it pops up, it doesn't leave until I close the assy and re-open it (no need to restart Inventor but for safety i always do). It also doesn't matter if it's a small or large assy.

If there is anything else you need please let me know!

Hi Frank,

Do you enable "Disable Automatic Refinement" option in Application Options->Display?
And do you mean when you open any assembly file, rotate/zoom, then you will see the problem?

Thanks,

Hi Lisa,

I don't have the "Disable Automatic refinement" enabled but there are workstations here with the same issue that have it enabled.

I just talked with some colleagues for a couple of situations it occurs in:

  1. It never occurs instantly when a model is opened, it pups up randomly so it doesn't matter if your working five minutes or an hour on a model.
  2. Most of the time it happens when zooming in or out, after that the "ghost" plane will stay also during rotation. But I don't know if it's just zooming that triggers it because we all use 3d mouses so most of the times your zooming and rotating at the same time.
  3. In most cases it stays until you close the entire assy.
  4. In some cases when editing a part in assembly it occurs and when finishing edit and coming back to the assy it's gone and the model is fine again. Unfortunately my colleague did not try to go back into the part to see if it re-occurs.
  5. It is always in assy's, never in parts

Hope this helps!

Hi Frank,

Would you please contact me via email for further discussion? We have identified some problem and possible fix, but not sure whether it can help your case or not. I would like to send you a fixed patch for validation.

My email is Lishuang.Lu@autodesk.com

Thanks,

-Lisa
