MDT 2009 (Autodesk Mechanical Desktop 2009) install with IV 2015 (Inventor 2015)

I have a large number of MDT files that I need to convert to Inventor. When I use the Inventor 2015 Import I get the following error.

Mechanical Desktop must be installed for translation.

I have downloaded the install file for latest MDT 2009 (Autodesk Mechanical Desktop 2009) install disk from Autodesk. From the ReadMe file I found this note.

  • Note: It can installed alone if the following registry setting is present: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Autodesk\Inventor\RegistryVersion13.0] "ProductEdition"="INVBUN". There is a registry file "Inventor2009.reg" under the install root folder and double clicking it will set the registry automatically for you.

During the install I get the Error "Autodesk Inventor" was not found. So the registry change does not work.

Please explain how I can install MDT 2009, WITHOUT installing Inventor 2009 ~2012.

Hello alh-telesis

It looks like you are stuck at the activation/installation step while attempting to download software, or are having problems with starting your software immediately after installing. The following article(s) should help you resolve the problem:

Communication Failure message during download and installation - Note that this article also provides alternate downloading and installation methods.

Application Manager Update stuck at installing

In order to manually activate your software (in cases where the activation appears stuck), please refer to Manually Activating Your Autodesk Software.

If the activation window is not displayed, others have resolved this by completely uninstalling and reinstalling their software. Please refer to How to Remove all Software from a Windows System for assistance.

You can't use MDT with INventor 2015.  You must have Inventor 2012 installed and you must also have owned Inventor 2012 in the past in order for this to work.  There's no exception and no work-arounds for it.

I call shenanigans !

We have at least two workstations that have MDT 2008 and import files using Inventor 2015. It opens MDT in the background and yet creates an assembly or part as expected.

I've been asked to recreate this on other workstations.

I understand that your answer is the politically correct Autodesk answer, but I think others may have a better option.

By changing the Registry Key to "RegistryVersion16.0" and the MDT 2009 installer ran as expected.

Welcome to the workaround.

Now I am waiting on me re-seller to help me with an appropriate serial number and activation code.

More to come.

Hi alh-Telesis,

Be mindful that you might be violating the End User License Agreement (EULA), in which case Otto will smash down your front door and confiscate everything you own except your goldfish and three socks... or something like that. I'm not really sure what happens, but you might want to ask those questions, if you've not already.

I hope this helps.
Best of luck to you in all of your Inventor pursuits,
Curtis

Update ...

My reseller was not of much help, Otto keep telling me "No Way" (and wanted all but three of my socks), but the online chat reached via the subscription registration and activation page, worked out well.

I had a very nice discussion with an Autodesk licensing rep (Maria was AWESOME), who emailed me the activation codes based on my serial number and Request Code. She even waited while I used them to activate the software.

The worst part about this is now I have to translate MDT models into Inventor, clean them up and stuff them into Vault.
