Long-standing Inventor Sketch mode Fillet bug

I've been using Inventor for over 15 years and I think this bug probably has me beat. When I have a fully constrained sketch (or nearly so) with 2 lines with an Equal constraint (like the short length of the tips of an H) and then a Fillet is applied to one of them and an adjacent line, Inventor hangs for apparently an infinite time (or at least so long I can no longer justify waiting around). The program doesn't seem to crash, but rather gets stuck in a loop trying to figure things out but can't resolve it. My only solution is to terminate or kill the program with Task Manager and lose all of my work since the last save... SPEAKING OF THAT.... WHY IS THERE NO AUTOSAVE IN INVENTOR??? This program has been around for almost 20 years and Autodesk has FAILED to implement an autosave so far. I understand that it is complicated with all of the open files and vault, etc. but really... 20 years? Please get one integral to the program, not just a little nagging reminder to save!

Can you share the file for this:

share.PNG

Also, what happens if you try and do a fillet with a value ... not with the parameter  and / 'd by ... etc

I'm unable to share the file because the program had to be killed and I hadn't saved it while working on that sketch and I redid things differently so all there is to go on it my screenshot and memory of what happened. The screenshot I took was after the program hung up. I don't believe it would make a difference whether a parameter was used or not. I've seen this happen numerous times before, but it's been a little while since I last saw it.

Why is there not an Autosave feature that can just internally save the state of the program and what was done with the open & checked out files? Seriously Autodesk... What's taking you so long to get this working?

It's hard to say why it happens without seeing it happen ... or it being repeatable.

It could be something sketch related and not the actual fillet itself...

I think the problem is equal constrain and fully constrain.

I've seen interesting results with rectangle having equal constrain on opposite edge.

Fillet shorten the edge and try to solve for the equal length.

Usually I'll get an over constrain or cannot fillet.

I haven't seen it hang.

Hi Adam,

I think you are probably on 2019 RTM build. Please install 2019.3 update. I recall I have seen a similar issue like this, which got fixed in one of the updates.

Regarding Auto-Save, this is indeed is one of the most frequently asked workflows, particularly from AutoCAD users. It would be great if Inventor supports Auto-Save. Unfortunately, due to the associativity, the way the files are saved, undo stream, and other issues, we still have not found a good solution to enable Auto-Save safely. There are 3rd-party tools or custom scripts (on Inventor app store) allowing Inventor to save automatically. However, we have seen users reporting corrupted files possibly due to the tools. But, we are not sure if they are directly related to those tools. Feel free to try them.

Many thanks!

Hi Adam,

Do you mind checking the update build you have? Go to Help -> About. Does it say 2019.3 update build 275?

Many thanks!

Hi Adam,

Yes, you are on the latest update to 2019 (2019.3). Could you share the file leading to the hang here or send it directly to me (johnson.shiue@autodesk.com)? I would like to understand the behavior better.

Many thanks!

Unfortunately it's not possible to share the file that caused the crash. That is why my issue of Auto-Save was weaved into the same post, because I hadn't saved the file recently enough to give you anything meaningful.

As to Auto-save, there has to be a way that inventor could save a temporary file for the working session every few commands that captures the individual commands in such a way as to allow the user and/or Autodesk to easily reconstruct everything that led up to a crash like this. I know you guys at Autodesk are a talented bunch and should be able to implement this in a workable way. I'm just baffled as to why it's been an issue for you.

Hi Adam,

Many thanks for your kind words! Certainly, anything is possible. I recall there are apps on Autodesk Inventor App store allowing Auto-Save. In theory, it should work, since some people use Inventor APIs to create such apps. But, I can think of some tricky situations that the Auto-Save may cause more problems than benefits.

Anyway, we are still looking for a robust solution at the moment.

Thanks again!
