Linking excel file without using MS excel

I get that I have to have local MS excel installation for links to work, but is it actually impossible to have any workarounds? I mean, libreoffice is out there and it is capable of importing xlsx's without any trouble so the format being proprietary is still possible to interact with. Is it possible to tell Inventor to use libreoffice somehow? Would it make any sense to wait until some update is rolled that enables the use of libreoffice?
