Large assembly drawing freezing up/ taking forever to update

We are currently using 2014 and when i open up piece parts drawings it does fine but when it come to the top level drawings (assembly) it is constantly freezing up. i was wondering if anyone has any suggestions to help with the problem. (when i say freeze im talking 20-45 mins).

nismo1990,

When creating your large assembly drawings how many pages and views do you have?  For each view are you using different LODs for each view?  This is one of the most common reasons a drawing updates slowly.
Is there a reason your company is not upgrading to the latest release?  The Inventor team has been working quite a bit with Large Assembly drawings, Inventor 2018.1 is much faster when updating views and in 2019 we sped up both based view and projected view creation.

Thanks,

Hi! Let me ask you a few questions, because the information you provided is not yet actionable.

1) How much RAM do you have? What about graphics card?

2) How big is the assembly (number of components)?

3) Does the drawing reference LODs?

4) Is Express mode on (Tools -> Application Options -> Assembly -> Enable Express mode).

5) Where is \Design Data\ located? What about Appearance and Material Library?

6) Where are the files located (locally or network)?

7) Does this behavior happen recently or it has been like this?

Many thanks!

1) How much RAM do you have? 32.0 GB

2) What about graphics card? nividia geforce gtx 1070

3) How big is the assembly (number of components)? If I look at bill of materials and the look parts only and                                                                                                                then qty I have around 3,370. but the assembly is just

                                                                                                two sub assemblies.

4) Does the drawing reference LODs? yes

5) Is Express mode on (Tools -> Application Options -> Assembly -> Enable Express mode). yes

6) Where is \Design Data\ located? What about Appearance and Material Library? network

7) Where are the files located (locally or network)? network

8) Does this behavior happen recently or it has been like this? its a regular thing.

Hi! I think the performance issue is probably related to several things. I would try moving the \Design Data\ and Appearance/Material Library locally (only admin can edit). Make sure graphics driver is up-to-date. Limit referencing one LOD in one idw file.

You may also want to try turning off Express mode and see if it makes a difference. Inventor 2014 is very old. It does not have performance enhancements like 2018 and 2019. If possible, please upgrade to 2018 or 2019.

Many thanks!

only 1 page per file.

the drawings may reference two different lods.

we have 2018 but the upper management has not made the call to move all projects up to it yet.

Hi! I think if you move \Design Data\ folder and Appearance/Material Library locally, you will see significant performance improvement. Graphics driver needs to be updated too.

Certainly 2018 and 2019 perform far better than 2014 at least in large assembly modeling workflows.

Many thanks!
