Issue: Trying to simplify giant inventor step files

Hello Autodesk Forum,

Recently at work we've been receiving giant inventor files in a .stp format. These files need to be used in a Revit federate model, but mainly just the outer geometry for collision control and things like that.

These files are basically impossible to work with in Inventor, even on a CAD-computer, so I'm looking for solutions that will allow me to circumvent actually working with a file of this size in Inventor.

So far I've tried importing the .stp file (in the 3D Model tab --> Create --> Import) and manually filtering which objects I want to import in to the file. This way I can divide the file into smaller subfiles that are easier to work with. Am I on the right path, or are there better solutions?

Hopefully this post is somewhat coherent, as english is not my native language.

Thank you in advance!

Hi

What is your workflow like?

Creating a model in Inventor and transferring it to Revit?

Or vice versa?

Have you checked the model simplification tools in Inventor?

If possible, import everything then delete what you don't need.

You might need to let it run overnight.

Make sure you close as many programs as possible so IV has all the RAM it can use.

Why Inventor files in STP?  Can you get Inventor files to use in Inventor?

They can Pack n Go everything in a ZIP file.

Hi! In the STEP Import dialog, click on Select tab -> there you can select the components you want to bring in. You don't need to bring in the whole thing.

Another option is to get the original Revit file. Starting from 2022, Inventor can import/link to an rvt file.

Many thanks!

Export the Inventor files as Revit .rvt files.

No, wait. YOU STILL CAN'T DO THAT, and I have no clue why this interoperability STILL does not exist. Gee Wally, maybe someone from Autodesk can answer that question!

Try exporting as an IFC and see if that helps.

@3D4Play

As far as I know you can export:

  1. rvt by the simplification tool
  2. rfa by the bim environment
