ISOLATE COMPONENT IN SUBASSEMBLY

I have subassemblies in my main assembly.  Why can't I isolate a part without the whole subassembly highlighting?  I must dig thru the assembly tree in order to isolate a component.  That's very annoying.  Can somebody help?
