iPart File Generation Using a Vanilla Template

Hi

I have an issue with iPart file generation and the iProperties and User Parameters.

Scenario.

Make an iPart file with all "User parameters" and iProperties in place that I would normally do if it was a standalone part.

I then generate the files as per normal.

- All good so far.

The problem is that the User Parameters present in the Default Template, will fail to populate correctly, therefore affecting the BOM.

Example:

Part length of 1500mm

My default template has amongst others a "LENGTH" User Parameter. This causes the iPart to create a duplicate parameter of "LENGTH_1" Naturally, this causes an issue with the use of this field.

Resulting in "LENGTH = 0"

FIX:

The only way to work around this issue, is to delete my "Standard.ipt" file (Well, rename it temporarily)

Generate the iPart files.

(Using above example, LENGTH=1500)

Rename the Standard.ipt template file when I am finished with the iPart file creation.

So back to the question.

Can I specify a vanilla/alternate template file for the iPart file generation process?

Thanks.

Hopefully I have explained this clearly. (It sounded much better in my head at the time)

Hi! If I recall correctly, it would grab Standard.ipt as the template file. Could you change the Standard.ipt so it does not have LENGTH parameter?

Many thanks!

Thanks for the reply.

That is the whole reason for the post, I currently have to delete my current template, I assume it then forces Inventor to use the default Standard.ipt from the install directory, or some other built-in template.

I was just wondering if there is a way to bypass the fact that I have to delete my default template before generating iParts? If not, that's also okay, just a wondering if I have been doing it incorrectly all this time, and the answer was always there and I just never saw it.

Thanks.

Simply save your default iPart Template a "Standard" within your Inventor Templates folder:

c:\Users\Public Documents\Autodesk\Inventor 201* (year)\Templates\

Inventor 2020, In-Cad, Simulation Mechanical

Just insert the picture rather than attaching it as a file

Hi Blair

Thanks, I am not sure I understand your suggestion.

I already have my custom "Standard.ipt" template in my defined templates folder.

This is the file that the iPart creation uses by default.

If I delete this file, the iPart creation uses the "c:\Users\Public Documents\Autodesk\Inventor 2018\Templates\Standard.ipt"

That's the whole point of this post, If it is possible, I don't want to delete my personal "Standard.ipt" file every time I want to make an iPart.

If possible I would like to specify a different template file for the iPart generation. (In this case "c:\Users\Public Documents\Autodesk\Inventor 2018\Templates\Standard.ipt", which is a vanilla template)

What I have thought about, is perhaps writing a little code which I can run before generating parts which will rename my template file, then when I am done, I can restore my template file, with another bit of code. Should be fairly simple, and much less effort than file explorer.

Thanks for your valuable input.

If you don't specify a template file to use, Inventor will always default to "Standard.ipt". In our template folder we have over a dozen IPT files which we can choose from.

When you create a new file, you need to browse to the specific template file.

Hi

I get all of that, that's exactly what I want to do, but only when I press the "Generate files"button

IPART.JPG

Edit:

The generate files, is using my customized template, I don't want that to happen, I want it to use any other template, preferably a Vanilla template, with Nothing in it. (eg, the one in the public user directory.)

The only way then would be to have the "standard" as you plain vanilla template and create other templates for specific parts creation.

There should be a choice when creating/pushing out files. You can post this request to the "Ideas" forum. Like is the "IDEAS" link on the top of this user forum.

Hi All,

I need answer, why some user when use iPart Feature, not continue to Publish Part?

What totally function of iPart Feature and Publish Part?

when come issue like automatically added suffix at iPart Member, after im publish part, there are no create.

so why not you continue to publish part your ipart?

Please use the ACCEPT AS SOLUTION or KUDOS button if my Idea helped you to solve the problem.

Hi @dgreatice

Apologies mate, but I don't fully understand your post.

@blair

I guess the best workaround is what Blair mentioned, of having a Vanilla Standard.ipt template, and then having another template to create all my parts with. If I created a lot of iParts, this would be a viable solution, but unfortunately, I seldom create iParts.

I only have one template, its all I need, everything is configured via iLogic, so its very easy to click "New Part" every time, and not worry about which template I am using. (That's the nature of my business, it is not necessarily the same for everyone else)

Thanks for the input though, I will post this in the "Ideas" section.

Now I have to work on the iLogic to rename my Template file.....(Hint..anyone, only joking, the challenge will be fun for my poor coding abilities)

Hi,

I just ask, after creating iPart, why not continue process to Publish Part become Custom Content Center Part?

I trial create iPart, and then continue to Publish Part, there are no suffix name created.

Please use the ACCEPT AS SOLUTION or KUDOS button if my Idea helped you to solve the problem.

Hi

Okay, understand.

It was a once off for this job, and no need to put anything in my library.

I had 163 different length struts, and it was easier to detail one assembly, and tabulate the rest.

I just wanted something that took the human element out of the equation, it was easier to create an iPart, and then tabulate the iPart.

The added benefit was, if there was a typo somewhere, the assemblies would have failed, giving me one extra checking step. (I used tight constraints for error checking)

Because I don't use iParts very often, it was a whole learning process for me, as I needed to include a whole heap of Excel data in the part, I used excel to help populate some of the iProperties, this is where the template issue came about, as I was experiencing difficulties when generating the BOM.

Just an update.

I have a working solution.

I have effectively created a Vanilla template.

I removed all the "User Parameters" from my Standard.ipt file and have moved it into an iLogic rule

I now generate all the default "User Parameters" when I need them.

I did however find one problem.

There is a suppressed rule which is triggered via a user parameter. (In my case, "THICK")

Because "THICK" does not exist anymore, the rule was automatically being populated with an entry

THICK=0 'Deleted parameter

This one baffled me for a bit, as I did not expect inventor to do this in a suppressed rule, I guess it has something to do with the trigger?

I added the following which solved that problem:

trigger.JPG

At this stage, all my testing has worked, and I am a happy camper.

iPart creation now works as expected.
