Inventor thinks the file changed from a moment ago when I checked it in.

It happens over and over again. I save all my files, and then check the assembly into the vault.

It goes through the process and when it's done, the screen blinks, and the main file is high lighted in red and there is a file-changed asterisk.

I made no changes. Why does this happen? Is there a way to stop it?

Sometimes I thinks it saves the last displayed window. If so, can this feature be turned off?

Hi Bob,

There are three logical reasons causing this behavior to happen.

1) There are out-of-context edit to one of the subcomponents, so that the assembly or drawing needs to be updated. 2) The file location has been changed (the resolved path is changed).

3) There is a bug or reference corruption within the file and Inventor thinks the file needs to be saved.

If possible, please share an example that exhibits the behavior here (or send it directly to me johnson.shiue@autodesk.com). I would like to understand the behavior better.

Many thanks!

Thank you for your interest in my issue.

The pack-and-go zip file came in at 206MB. Can I upload it privately to you?

Wbr,

Bob

Hi Bob,

Many thanks for sharing the files with me! I have downloaded it. Please unshare it now. I am still trying to reproduce the behaviors you described here.

Thanks again!

After some private messages back and forth Johnson sent me this which I accept as the solution:

Hi Bob,

Many thanks for sharing the App Options! It looks like when Inventor detect the files need to be migrated and also there are pending change due to out-of-context edit (change in reference files), Inventor will prompt to save. The settings are correct for PDM workflows. It is because you do need to make sure everything is up-to-date, save, and check in.

The logical reason to explain the “random” behavior is that for performance purpose, Inventor may not fully load certain components (created in prior releases). So, they may not need to be migrated and they are not prompted to save. However, after certain operations (editing), the files are fully loaded and they need to be migrated. All of a sudden, the prompt comes up.

Actually, there is no need to fully migrate the files. The data saved in prior versions can perfectly work fine without having to save on the current version, if there is no change. So, I suggest you may want to turn off “Prompt to Save for Migration” option. This may reduce the “random” behavior. Please check with your CAD Admin first and see if this is Ok per your company process.

Thanks again!
