Inventor Studio 2018 crashes when rendering AVI animations

Anonymous
Not applicable

As the title states, my laptop crashes immediately when I hit the "Render" button in Inventor Studio. I'm wondering if it is a codec issue, I have no problems rendering .wmv files but I need full HD for a presentation coming up. I wish there was a better alternative to rendering in Inventor, I tried importing into 3ds Max with little success: only a few materials imported and there are over a thousand parts to my assembly. I'm going to upload the crash report details. Here's the diagnostic information pulled from Inventor:

I don't know if you have already done this but try to install the latest version / package of the inventor 2018. Throughout the year Autodesk usually put on the internet new versions correcting some errors.

I hope I have been useful

Hi! Did you send in the crash report? If yes, please send me an email directly (johnson.shiue@autodesk.com). I would like to understand the crash better.

Many thanks!

Thanks for the great advice @Anonymous, I see that you are visiting as a new member to the Inventor Forum.
Welcome to the Autodesk Community!

@Anonymous were you able to get your rendering to stop crashing? Are you up to date with your Inventor Updates

Is the Design Doctor (red plus) or Update (yellow lightning bolt) lit up? Make sure you go to Manage > Rebuild All before going into Inventor Studio.

Did we notice this posting is about 2 months old with no answer until now..   Perhaps the user has moved on since there was no answer..  Smiley LOL

Update: If the OP is still looking for an answer or solution.  However I've seen this issue many times and recently in Inventor 2018/2019..   Updates do not fix the issue.   Not sure how long your animation is but don't try to animate the whole thing at once.  Do it in short increments like 5 seconds.  In addition I found some will fail/Inventor crash at 5 seconds but animation with no problem for 1 seconds shorter.   In addition Inventor Studio has not changed much and I think the biggest change was back in Inventor 2016 with the intro of IBL (image based lighting) styles.

This problem is ongoing. I have the latest updates of 2019 Pro. Output in .wmv format produces a poor quality video. This also happens when creating video from .ipn. I've got a lot invested in this and a very upset customer.

Have you tried rendering to frames instead of a (compressed) video container?

I just tried that. I get better images but have to stitch together 15,000 images to make the video.

Hi @Anonymous,

Have you tried additional video codec instead? For example, you can download and install the Xvid video codec from https://www.xvid.com/download/ which is free, after that you just restart Inventor and switch to use the Xvid option as the compressor when you create the AVI animation.

We're looking into how to address this in the default experience. I am sorry for the inconvenience this brings.

Hello @gmontgomery you can set the output type to .AVI and then when you select Render it will populate the list of available codecs that are installed on your computer.

I am also having this same rendering issue.  I am able to render as a WMV but not an AVI file.  Inventor crashes as soon as I click render when trying an AVI.  I do not see (or get) the option to switch the video compression to Codec?
