Inventor Speed on NAS

Hi everyone,

I manage (IT Part) a small cluster of people working with Inventor Pro 2017. This is our setup:

We are on a corporate domain and all computers authenticate on the domain. All network equipment is CISCO, properly configured and all NICS are 1GBPS and fully working without issues. DOMAIN is workin as it should without any issues at all.

We have a NAS (QNAP-871) with 2 SSD's as accelerator drives and FAST SAS drives in it. We can read from any PC at around 120MB/S from a shared folder on the NAS. Write speed is identical. This basically means that we are maxing out our network, and the 1GB/s cards are the bottleneck.

This is by design and I am confortable with these speeds. Latency is also very low.

We don't user VAULT at all, and at this point it's still not an option.

My users, load up projects that are stored on a Shared folder on this NAS DRIVE.

The problem is that loading times are fine, but when saving a project it takes forever versus a local project stored on a USB Pen for instance.

I am at a loss why from within Inventor writing to the NAS takes an huge amount of time when from Windows Explorer it simply doesn't.

Any ideas?

Regards, Helder.

Welcome to the Forum.

I guess I will get the hard part out first.

We do not officially support NAS devices because of the vast number of different combinations.

That does not mean that you can't get it to work.

Is this a new network?

Do the users have performance issues saving to other network locations?

Are your NICs  set to full duplex?

Have you tried turning off your antivirus?

I am guessing that everyone is on the same vlan as the NAS device?

Thank you.

Hi,

Thank you, I am aware that NAS aren't officially supported, but thank you anyway.
Regarding your questions:

1 - New network, less then 1 year old, new cabling and routers, switching, the works. CAT6 tested and certified.
2 - No performance issues on the same NAS with other shared folders. This is one very fast NAS and we can write and read at speed in excess of 100 megabytes/second.
3 - All set to full duplex, only INTEL NICs.
3 - Yes, I have as well as Windows Defender which is a pain to disable in Windows 10.
4 - You guessed right.

I am clueless, apparently this is Inventor related.

Com os meus melhores cumprimentos, Helder Coelhas.

Inventor does not do any of the file handling.

We make calls to the OS and .NET to get and save files.

I know that other have found performance issues with:

Group Policy and digitally sign SMB packets

Resolved here:

https://redmondmag.com/articles/2014/05/16/network-performance-problems.aspx

Some Inventor users have turned this off and found much better performance.

Also, if you are not using IPV6, I would suggest disabling it on all of your devices.

Thank you.
