Inventor Performance Issues

Hi All,

I am hoping this community can help me resolve the slow/bogged performance I am experiencing with Inventor 2017. I am working in inventor on medium sized assemblies and layout out part files. Inventor is extremely slow when creating or editing features such as generating a new sketch, extruding, deriving/making parts, etc.

We are also using Vault professional with our server based in an amazon server off site. Below are the specs for my workstation which I think should be more than adequate to run large assemblies, yet system performance is very slow. My uneducated opinion is that is seems to be a memory/CPU issue rather than a graphics issue, as it doesn't have problems rendering, but really bogs down when I try to generate new features.

I spend ~18 minutes every hour waiting for inventor to load/refresh/generate features and it is becoming a large problem for my productivity. I have updated all the relevant drivers in hopes of fixing the issue but it that does not seem to have helped at all.

my coworker has a comparable workstation (which he built himself)  and does not have any of these performance issues.  if anything, my workstation has better specs.  This issue has been getting worse and worse over the last 3 months of use.

Any suggestions you guys have would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

Workstation hardware specs:

HP Z420 workstation
4 Core E-1630 3.6 Ghz CPU
32GB RAM
1TB Solid State Drive
4TB HArd Drive
Nvidia 4000 2GB DDRR5 Graphics Card
Windows 10 Pro

Thank you,
Kyle

Your computer specs look good.

How big is the assembly?

How many components are in the assembly?

Is the assembly saved on your local drive or network?

Are the other designers having performance issues?

Kyle,

Are you saying that your coworker opens the same assembly on his computer and doesn't see the same performance problems as you do?  That could point to a hardware issue with your machine, though your specs do seem more than adequate for a medium sized assembly.  When you are running into these performance issues can you take a look at Task Manager and look at the CPU and RAM usage to see if Inventor is using a lot of either? Also does your computer get slower as the day goes on or does it stay the same?

Thanks,

Hey Shaya,

The assembly is <20 piece parts. We use a layout part which is 103,000 KB. The file is saved to my local drive on my C drive. There are 3 design engineers here, I am having the issues stated above, another coworkers (who's machine is lower performance but is also running Windows 10) has instability issues where inventor will crash frequently, and the third coworker who built his own machine has no issues at all.

Kyle,

That correct.  If he opens the same assembly, it runs smoothly. The PC is a refurbished machine - is it possible the hardware has degraded overtime?

even when inventor is "locked up" for >30 seconds at a time,  the tack manager does not show the computer "working hard"  see attached image.

Kyle,

Are there any differences between your Inventor install and your coworkers?  Also are you all using the same add-ins?  You should be able to check that by going to the Tools tab and selecting Add-ins.  You may try unloading all of your add-ins and see if you see any performance improvements.  Also in Application Options under the Hardware tab are you running on Performance?

Thanks,

No differences that I know of. I have already gone through and unloaded all the non-essential add ins. I am running in performance mode.

Based on your descriptions, I can say that the assembly file and Inventor software are not part the performance issue.

Is there a security software or antivirus running on your computer? Try to turn them completely off and then test the assembly again.

Also, disconnect your computer from the network (no network or internet) and try it again.

OK so  disconnected from the network and that didn't help.  I also logged out/disconnected from the vault and that didn't seem to have an effect either.

If you reboot and try Inventor right after logging in is it still slow?

What about if you log on to the computer as a different user?

Thanks,

Danny

If you login into that same computer as a different admin Windows user, does your performance get better?

Just to confirm, you and your co-worker are using the same Vault IPJ (Project file from your Vault).

What is the path to your local Vault workspace?

Thank you.

Hi Kyle,

Does your collegue also run with HP Z420 workstation? If not, I still suspect this may relate with hardware. If yes, then it is more like a software configuration or system setting related.

Meanwhile, are you both operate the same assembly file?

Thanks,

My Colleague is working on a custom built workstation.  Normally we work on different assemblies; I own the design of one component, he owns the design of another. however, To test out performance, he has opened up my assembly and it runs smoothly on his machine.

I have tried rebooting and that does not help the problem;  I have also created a brand new user account and tried running the same assembly with no improvements. No improvements turning off all of the antivirus software either.

I spoke with the Nvidia support guys and they just had me update to the latest drivers.  no improvement there either.

Thanks again for all your help,

Kyle

Are you using a 3D Connexion device.

If so, unplug it.  Does Inventor now run smoothly?

If so, when you plug the device back in - go to the system tray icon and right click and select Calibrate.

I am using a 3D connexion space mouse, unplugged it and makes no difference.

You mentioned "tried running the same assembly with no improvements".

It this performance issue linked to specific assemblies?

Thank you.

Hi Kyle,

So based on your provided information, I think this performance issue is somehow caused by the hardware, and most probably is caused by the CPU, the computing speed looks is not satisfied.

For now I suggest you running the Inventor bench tool with Inventor from both your and your colleague's machines. You may follow below thread to use the tool. After finish, you can post the result here or in that thread for review and discussion.
