Inventor 2023.1 unexpectedly shutting down ucrtbase.dll

I am going through and updating some of our inventor template styles to match the style library changes that where made.  I open a batch of maybe 5 dwg files. Nothing crazy, 1 sheet, no models attached, draft view, simple as you can get.  I go to update the style, hit yes to all, okay, save the file, then close the dwg.  Proceed to next file.  Sometimes I can get through all of them and when I close the last one inventor goes down.  Sometimes I can't get through them all.  No error report dialog or I would have submitted.  Windows says it's faulting module: ucrtbase.dll.

I found this post, but we don't have Inventor Nastran addin so I couldn't try anything here.

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/inventor/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Inven...

I wasn't sure about my graphics card so I tried with and without toggling on "software graphics" in the application options but both resulted in inventor shutting down.

I'm running 2023.1 installed, all of our custom addin's for our company are disabled.  I do have our application options set differently for file paths.  I tried disabling the My Feedback addin but that didn't seem to make a difference.  I am going to have one other user try it on his system to see if he get's similar results.

Any other thoughts?

Hi! The hardware looks fine to me. I don't see any issue except the Intel graphics driver being outdated. Please make sure you use Nvidia Control Panel and set Inventor.exe to run on the GPU full time.

If it still does not work, start up Inventor and go to Tools -> App Options -> Hardware -> select "Conservative" mode. Does it work better now?

Many thanks!

Unfortunately these didn't work.  I tried all three of these combo's:

1. Setting to conservative (before the forcing graphics to NVIDIA)

2. Forcing Graphics to NVIDIA.  I didn't have the option in my NVIDIA panel so I went through window graphics settings to set it and selected Inventor.exe for 2023 as my program (see image)

3. Forcing Graphics to NVIDIA and setting to conservative.

GraphicsSetting.jpgGraphicsSetting.jpg

Still same crash/fault in windows logs.

To add more to this,

I did have another user just try opening and saving some stuff.  Different machine, out of the box inventor, different set of files and he had similar results.  I checked his windows logs and it also is the same faulting module name as the one I posted.  (ucrtbase.dll)

The steps he took basically was...

1.  Opened about 7 files (small 8 1/2 x 11 shop drawings - 1 sheet in the file).  Saved them, closed them (it may have migrated the files from 2022.1 to 2023.1 during first save but I am not sure, I can double check if needed).  All good.

2. Opened 1 more file (it may have been a file that was done in step 1) so already migrated.  Did save as until there was 10 copies.  Closed the file after the last save as and inventor crashed without warning.

My files I was using where also 2022.1 originated, I used task scheduler to migrate them to 2023.1.  Not sure if that is a theme or not.

Try this process.. to see if you can repeat it.

1. Open a bunch of drawings. 5-10

2. Click update for the styles... my files had some they needed updating.. so yes to all. & then okay.

3. Save file & close.  Or just click the "x" to close the document and hit yes to save it.

- repeat -

Usually after you click on the "X" to close a file it will go down.  A lot of times it's the last file open.

I tried this again on files that where originally 2022.1, but already saved to 2023.1.

The other common thing between all systems we tried it on is that we turned off my home tab in the application options.

Hi! If the crash leads to a crash report dialog, please send it in and send me an email [email protected]. I would like to understand the crash better. Another thing to try is to right-click on Inventor desktop icon -> Properties -> Compatibility -> Change High DPI Settings -> check both boxes.

Is this file specific? Or, you can reproduce the behavior with any file.

Many thanks!

Hi there,

Unfortunately any time inventor went down I did not get any crash report dialogs or I would have submitted them.  My only indication about something going wrong was the fact that it went down and what showed up in my window logs.  If there are files stored on my computer I can send that will help you let me know how to get them.

It doesn't appear to be file specific, but the only files I did try it on were dwgs initially created in 2022.1 and then migrated or saved to 2023.1.  I didn't test on part, assembly or any type of other files.  I can send you a batch of the files via email if you would like them for testing.

I will change the settings and see if that makes a difference with the files I was trying it on.

Unfortunately setting those compatibility settings within the shortcut didn't seem to matter.  I thought it was working but didn't.  I was able to update the styles and save on a batch of 4 files I had open, then I opened a batch of 7 and on the closing and saving of the last document for that batch it crashed.  It seems to be still saving my work which is a good thing.  Was still the same error according to windows logs.

Attached my shortcut settings I tried for record.

Hi! I could be wrong but the behaviors you describe still sound hardware related. If it was a software problem, it should be persistent in most cases. The random behavior indicates something else is at play. Go to NVIDIA Control Panel -> 3D Settings -> Manage 3D settings. In Global Settings, select Base Profile. In Program Settings, select "Autodesk Inventor" and take a snapshot of the existing settings (scroll down if necessary).

Many thanks!

Looks greyed out.  Would it be because everything I tried didn't work?  I put things back the way I found them in terms of graphics settings.  We got it to reproduce on another machine, so that tells me it's maybe not a hardware issue.  IMO.  Windows issue?   Anyone else out there seeing any of this behavior?

I will tell you though... I don't feel it's graphics hardware related.  I have gotten it to go down on three different hardware systems.  I just tried it again by remoting into another pc.  Everything out of the box.  Bran new 2023 templates. My Home was turned off.  Steps before it crashed:

1. Started blank standard.ipt, made extrusion, basic box just for something.  save file & closed file.

2. Started blank standard.dwg file, save it.  Didn't do anything else to it.

3. Did save as on the same file.

4. Did a save copy as on the same file.

And it went down.  I do not recall if it just went down at the save copy as or as I was trying to close the file open.

No error reports to submit otherwise you would have had a pile of them.  Same faulting module as ucrtbase.dll.  2023.1 installed.

I can almost guarantee you it has something to do with us turning off the my home tab and inventor being at the state of having no documents open without the my home tab enabled.  My gut is telling me it's something with that.  I did turn my home on and ran with it for a while and it seemed better (no crashes).  Turned it off, restarted inventor and crashed almost instantly during document close (after save).  I'm going to leave it turned on for a while now and see if my prediction is correct.

Hi! It could be related to the Home page but I am not sure. Nor can I reproduce the behavior. Try something real quick. Right-click on Inventor desktop icon -> Properties -> Compatibility -> check "Run as Admin." I suspect certain operations are blocked due to your Windows user profile.

Another thing to try is to find the \Design Data\ folder and set it to Read and Write enabled.

Many thanks!

I tried the Run as admin and that didn't seem to make a difference.  I didn't think it would as I am considered admin on my machine anyway.  I can try the design data folder thing.  For our company I copy the base design data folder (under Public Documents) to a standard "working" location that is stored within our vault.  It's how I standardize the way our drafting systems are set up and release of style modifications for our department.  After I do that I then save our standard (from a master template) to the styles and check for migration issues.  Then go through and update/purge additional templates as needed.  We have one project file everyone uses that the vault is forcing and style library is typically set to "read-only" unless I am actually changing something and wanting to push to our standard.  I'm working on getting this all together for our company as I am seeing issues.  We don't have it released to other people yet.  We have seen the crashing and fault issue on two other computers that do not have any access to this setup.  I'll get back to you soon after quick test here.

I made sure design data and all subfolders/files were set to read-write.  I also tested it being set to read-only and read-write on the project level and was able to reproduce the crashing fairly quickly.  I really wish there was crash reports that came up so I could help out better.  Is there anything from the windows logs that might help you out?

Just FYI - I have been working on updating and purging styles for migrated part files and am not seeing much of a problem with crashing.

Hi! I worked with the project team and tried to find the cause. But, we are still clueless at the moment. Without a crash report, it gets very difficult to tell where the problem is. Here is an instruction on how to create Windows dump files. Please follow the steps to create the crash dump.

https://helpx.adobe.com/xd/kb/how-to-generate-crash-dump-on-windows-machine.html

After you collect the dump files, please send them in zip to me directly [email protected].

Many thanks!
