Inventor 2020 Update

Anonymous
Not applicable

Hi, I'm using the Inventor 2020 but my friend is using the 2021 version. I know the software is not backwards compatible, so I tried to update my old version to open my friend's file. However, I'm not sure which application I should choose to update and what the name of the update and add-ons is. Also, after I update, am I still able to edit my old files? Thanks.

Install Update 3 for 2020 to read 2021 files.

There will not be any adverse effects for your existing 2020 files and in fact you should always run latest update.

When you open the 2021 file in 2020.3 it will create a Derived Component.

As stated you can either install the latest update for Inventor 2020 (but that will only allow you to open/reference the files and not edit the feature tree)... Upgrading your version of Inventor to Inventor 2021 will allow you to open them and access the feature tree to fully edit the files..

Upgrading does not break access to your older files..

Assuming you are a student then Autodesk Inventor 2020 Professional is the program you want to update and you want to updated it to Autodesk Inventor 2021 Professional

Just piling on, here: to make it absolutely clear, Inventor 2020 and Inventor 2021 are two separate applications, and can exist on the same computer without a problem.  I have had as many as six different versions of Inventor on the same computer.  You want each one to be as up to date as possible, so install the latest .x update and .x.y update (if any) for 2020, and for 2021.  The latest update for 2020 will read 2021 files as derived parts.

For Inventor, updating is getting the latest patches/fixes/enhancements within one application; upgrading is installing a later version, whether you uninstall a previous version or not.

Hope that helps (if not, ignore it!),
