Inventor 2019: Creating a fillet failed

Hi,

I'm trying to create a smooth shape. I just want to round the edges of my model.

If I try to use the 'Fillet tool', it says:

Create fillet feature failed FilletProblem_MinimalSetup. ipt: Errors occurred during update Fillet1: Could not build this Fillet The attempted Fillet operation is too complicated for selected inputs.  Try changing the edges, applying the fillet(s) separately or in a different order, else try a face fillet or a different radius.

I created different versions of my model and also tried with Fusion 360. It showed me a very similiar error. If I go with values below .4 it will work, but I want a different outcome. Do I have to use another tool? Or can anyone please explain why this operation is too complicated and what I need to change?

 I've attached the project file.

Best regards

Hello @Anonymous!

I see that you are visiting as a new member to the Inventor Forum. Welcome to the Autodesk Community!

In Inventor 2019, I could easily add the fillets to the contour, attached is the dataset.

Maybe you could do a Screencast of the issue, so we can maybe see, what is happening.

Thanks!

Hello @marius.gildehaus,

thanks for your effort and reply. I am able to round the edges within to a value of 3mm. I want to set it to at least 5mm to really get a kind of round shape. I was able to do so at some point before cutting throgh the XZ-extrusion. I also thought about just cutting through XY-dimension but I would have to deal with different sizes at different positions. This seemed to be the easier solution. I've attached the screencast.

Your initial part geometry is far to small for a 2mm fillet. Try applying a 0.2mm fillet and it will work, but this also demonstrates why a 2mm fillet will fail.

I got same error too. Then realized that I forgot to use tangent for one of 3 arcs that I used for my object. So I think it can be about something related with constrain.

I hope that would be helpful.
