Inventor 2018 causing Windows File Explorer Crash (Win7 & Win10)

Anonymous

Computer terminal crashing constantly on file explorer when running Inventor 2018.

New Dell 7710 laptop workstation, had Win10 installed originally (thought this was the issue).

Removed Win10 for Win7 OS and reinstalled fresh, problem still there. No files can be accessed from File Explorer.........

There's no need to provide your email in the posting..

Can you check your Windows Event Logs and see what's causing the crash.

Are you seeing the Autodesk crash report dialog when the crash happens?  If so are you sending in the reports and including your email address?

Hi! Could you try something real quick? Start File Explorer and go to %temp% and delete all files there. After that, are you still able to reproduce the crash?

Many thanks!

After 30mins of running (cleared the files in %temp%) the terminal has crashed again on Windows file explorer.

I normally view thumbnails of the files I'm working on within a folder from file explorer and I know when explorer has crashed as the thumbnails dissapear. From this moment on any part of the terminal that utilises file explorer hangs. Only option I have from this point onwards is restart the PC.....

Many Thanks

As this problem been fixed? we are experiencing the same problem with 3 different workstations using Inventor 2018 (build: 227, Release 2018.2.3)

File explorer crashing randomly during the day, no error in the event viewer.

Instead of restarting computer we found that opening task manager and killing every explorer process and then runing a new task and opening Explorer.exe fixes the problem.

I am having the same problem.  We complete reinstalled windows and inventor and the problem still exists.  I am getting tired of have to reboot my system several times in a day.

I did notice that is happened when i did a save to an Inventor drawing.  I have worked in several models and done save on them with no issues.  It only seems to happens when working in the drawing module.

Hi! It is possible it could be related to Inventor not being registered properly. Start Windows command line -> type in "Invertor.exe /install"

If it still does not work, please take a look at the following document.

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/inventor-products/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcartic...

Please let me know if it works for you.

Many thanks!

To clarify what @johnsonshiue is indicating..

Use the following steps to re-register Autodesk Inventor with your operating system:

1.  Exit Inventor if still running

2a.  Win 8/8.1/10: Select the Windows start button and type CMD (but do not hit an enter)

2b.  Win 7:  Select the Windows start button and type CMD in the search field (but do not hit an enter)

3.  When CMD or command prompt appears in the list, right mouse click and select run as admin

4.  When the command prompt appears, navigate using dos commands to C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Inventor <version>\Bin or where your Inventor.exe is located if you changed the default install location of Inventor.

In this example I'm navigated to my Inventor 2018 (exe) location.

6.  Type Inventor.exe /install.

Wait a few mins and restart Inventor.   At this time you will not see anything occurring.  Don't panic.  Smiley Very Happy  However if you launch Windows task manager you can watch the Inventor.exe process (and see when it ends).

Does that resolve the issue?

Did anyone verify this issue is resolved? I have a user where we have to restart windows explorer about 6 times a day. I have tried multiple "Solutions" Seeing as this person is our main designer it is not ideal for him to have to keep dealing with the crashes, or for me to have to keep trying different troubleshooting "Solutions". I understand that is part of trouble shooting. I am just trying to see if anyone had tried the re-installation solution?

Hi! Does this issue only happen to one particular issue? Or it happens to other users too? Have all the Windows updates been applied?

Many thanks!

Only one user currently uses this machine. I have 3 other machines that were purchased at the same time of the exact same build that work fine, but those users do not use Inventor to the same extent. They mostly use Autocad Mechanical. All windows updates, and Inventor updates have been applied.

Hi Johnson, We have AutoCAD engineer using Inventor 2018 all the time. He had his desktop replaced due to this issue and new desktop installed just a few days ago and the issue is back 1 day after he started on the new machine. Can I please ask you to perform some detailed troubleshooting of this issue instead of providing irrelevant links and partial suggestions. The symptoms are quire clear - Inventor 2018 causing Windows explorer to fail causing the system being unusable until it is restarted again. It produces the same error "The filename or extension is too long" for anything you try to run including any desktop shortcuts or any Windows system tools. Can you please advise your best knowledge on this issue and also if you have any confirmed fix, please.

Hi! Based on your description, I personally do not believe the issue you are seeing is the same as this thread. Your issue should be related to almost full %temp% folder. Please go to File Explorer and hover to %temp% and clean up the files there.

Regarding your comments on irrelevant links and information, I don't understand what you meant by that. I know you are seeing an issue. The problem is that the issues are not reproducible on our end. Without having access to the exact machine to debug the problem, all we can do is to try things that we are aware of. There are too many variables leading to various behaviors.

This forum is for tips and tricks. If you have critical issues, you should contact Autodesk Product Support or Autodesk reseller near you. You should not rely on this forum for solving road-block issues.

Many thanks!

Thanks for sending me this information about Inventor 2018 and Windows explorer.
As I mentioned before, I have installed inventor 2018 on 3 different computers (Windows 10 and 7).
All 3 computers ran Inventor 2017 with no problems.
The issue began immediately after installing Inventor 2018.
People from Autodesk and people form M2 Tech (re-seller) helped , connected to my computer, made many changes.
Problem never went away.
On one of the computers I un-installed and re-installed Inventor. It did not help.
So, for now every 1.5 -2 hours I have to re-start my computers.
At the same time, I am sharpening my Solid Works skills.
Thank you,

Hi Iraj,

Have you installed all critical Windows Updates? I am not a magician. I cannot perform something out of blue without further information. Based on your description, your case seems to be specific to your environment. I am not aware of a systematic failure like this. I am sorry that the issue is not yet resolved but I don't have other tricks to provide.

Regarding your comments on SWX, it is always a good career preparation technique to learn more tools. SWX is a respectful competitor. Feel free to use it if it suits you better. Nobody could or should stop you. Inventor is also a very good product. It is one of the two popular mechanical design solutions in the world. As long as you use Inventor and you have trouble using it, we are here to help you.

Many thanks!
