Inventor 2017 stopped working - crash on start

Hi all,

No change was made on my install of Inventor 2017 and it now stopped working.

Every time I start it it crashes right away stating that an unexpected error has occurred.

I have tried the repair option, the re-install option, tried to remove and install again the SP1 pack and nothing helps...

The message windows doesn't provide any indication of what might be and I'm totally clueless of what to do next. 😞

Any hints? Thanks!

Welcome to the community..

When that crash report dialog appears, select the report details button and in the next dialog, hover over the crash dump.zip file and it will tell you where its located.   Private message (PM) me that zipped file and I will take a look at the crash information.  The crash report contains personal info so I don't want you to share it here.  Do you know how to PM someone?  If not hover over my name and select send a message (just like this)

Not sure if every crash is related to this or not but its failing on the OLE32.dll in your Windows operating system.  Did you update to the Windows 10 Anniversary version?  I might suggest that you send these reports into Autodesk and see what they say.  Sorry I couldn't help you.

If you let me know the email address you are entering into the crash report dialog, I can check the database to see if the reports show anything obvious.

Are you part of the Windows 10 Insiders Preview program?

No worries and thanks again.
In the mean time I found I would use Win tools to debug the crash dumps generated by Inventor and noticed the same.

The machine is subscribed to windows insider preview so it's using the current latest inside preview build for windows 10. Could be that this build brought some change that is causing now this behavior.

Yes most likely that is causing the issue.  I wouldn't recommend running CAD applications under Windows Environment that are not fully released and tested by Autodesk.  Even the Windows 10 Anniversary release is causing issues with Autodesk Products as we speak.

Using the email you supplied, I see 3 crash reports in the database for the last 30 days which are associated with that address.   All three reports are the same crash and are caused by the latest Windows 10 Insider Preview build 14936.   It appears that Microsoft changed/broke an API call with this build and the result is that all versions of Inventor will crash on startup with this specific build of Windows 10 installed.   We are working with Microsoft to determine the proper resolution.   At this time there's nothing we are aware of which will allow you to get past this crash.   The only recommendation I have at the moment is to use the "Feedback" option in  the Insider Preview program to let Microsoft know you are experiencing crashes with installed applications following their rollout of this new build.

We're currently working with Microsoft on this issue.

For now you cannot use ANY version of Inventor with the win10 insider program. New installations will also fail.

Updated information will be provided as it becomes available.

Thank you both.

That is definitively the issue and when I went to report in Feedback Hub (Microsoft) I noticed some other entries there reporting the same.

As a side note for anyone reading this, In the mean time a new build came out but the problem persists.

I can confirm that the problem has been solved, as of today's build, 14951. Inventor is running normally.

Are you getting a crash report like the other users?   If so please private message me like I requested the other use to do. The information you provide doesn't really help..

Hi! Scott,

Did you send the crash report with your email address? If yes, please send me an email (johnson.shiue@autodesk.com) and I would like to take a look at the crash report and understand the behavior better.

Many thanks!

Hi Scott,

My teammate helped me find the crash reports you submitted. This looks like graphics issue related to incomplete install. Could you try something real quick?

Go to Control Panel -> Programs -> Program and Features -> right-click on Autodesk Inventor Pro 2017 -> Uninstall/Change -> Repair Install.

After that, does it work better?

Many thanks!
