Inventor 2017 sketch constraints not transfering to assembly components

Hi, I hope someone is able to assist with this as it has been doing my head in and the forum and online search has come up short.

 

I am working through an online tutorial and having an issue when creating an assembly (iam) from a parts (ipt) file where I am not getting the anticipated results as the sketch block(s) constraints do not translate to the assembly components despite both tick boxes for Create equivalent assembly constraints and Constrain to layout plane being checked.

 

The assembly looks as expected just without the components constraints.

 

I include a screencast to illustrate the issue I am having and would appreciate direction where the issue may lie.

The "Create equivalent assembly constraints" is the one that carries sketch constraints over to the assembly constraints.  The "Constrain to Layout Plane" is only used to possibly offset the sketch when your are creating model parts from the sketches.  I show this at the end of the screencast.  If you see something I did differently that what you did it may solve your issue. If not, please attach you sketch block part file so someone can take a look at it directly.

Hi jhackney1972, thank you for input, having seen where you select the blocks when creating an assembly, I noticed when creating a sketch from my dwg file Inventor is creating duplicate block names with _1.00X behind some of the names, furthermore, when you select the sketch blocks on the layout they highlight in the sketch 1 dialog block only not the Block folder as seen on your selection. Finally as you pointed out on your assembly the Plunger component has a Layout:1 sub-directory with Mate:3 which my equivalent is missing and each subsequent test I have done using different elements produces the same result thereby ruling out an inherent dwg file error?

 

I attach sketch block part file as suggested plus the assembly file, it will be interesting to see your result when creating an assembly from the part file.

The files I am using are ones I created. I am currently working through 'Introduction to Engineering Graphics and Visualization for Design' through the Autodesk Design Academy.

You are just the most unlucky modeler I have run across lately!  When you selected a sketch constraint to use to put together your sketch blocks, you selected one that will not transfer to the assembly.  A "Concentric" sketch constraint is not valid for this operation.  If you use a "Coincident" sketch constraint, your model would have transferred perfectly.  I created a screencast of the process plus a bit more.

 

I mentioned in my screencast a few points about constraining sketches.  You may be only practicing and did not want to bother with fully constraining your block sketches but if is good to always practices good modeling so when it becomes important, you will do it automatically.  I also did a little bonus at the end on how to make a block of two blocks to make a sub-assembly when it goes into the assembly.  I am sorry that my Inventor 2017 went south at the end but you will see the sub-assembly in the box where I assign templates. 

 

Great work, keep it up and always practice good modeling techniques even when you are practicing.

Hi! I think I know where the problem is. It is about the sketch constraints you used in the blocks. You use Concentric constraint to constrain two circles. Unfortunately, Concentric constraint is not translated to assembly (see the help document below). You need to delete the Concentric constraint and add Coincident constraint instead. You will see the constraint is properly translated to axial Mate constraint in the assembly.

Hi jhackney1972, thanks for pointing out where the problem was creeping in from and of course the bonus piece and best practice information, this is testament to the value of seasoned members on the forum, sadly you can only learn these things by being taught or mimicking actions of others. I am trying to self teach and as mentioned currently working through an Autodesk Tutorial - Introduction to Engineering Graphics and Visualization for Design on the Design Academy website where annoyingly it show a concentric constraint translate perfectly in Inventor - and hence my dilemma.

 

Having worked through the method you instructed including creating a sub-assembly I managed the same result, right down to the application crash, go figure.

 

Again I appreciate your input and sure it will not be the last time I draw on the knowledge base of the forum. Cheers!
