Importing STEP as reference model not working

I just did  a small test of importing a step file with 2 surfaces and building some basic geometry and it doesn't work.  I have attached the files.

Open box working to see  the imported step file and features built from it.

now open box base, change the sketch dimensions, export to step and save over box base.stp

Go back to box working and the update icon is visible.  So far so good

Now hit update and watch it fall apart.

I did a similar test with splines in the sketch and the thicken failed as well.  Same for a solid.  Anything referencing an edge failed.

I don't get the point of the reference model import option when it cant even cope with an export that it created.

I normally use Alias to import surfaces with associativity but since it was deleted from the suite in 2014 it leaves me stuck on 2013 on an old win7 PC.  I was hoping this might allow a new workflow in updated versions but it seems not.

Is anyone using this import option productively with surfaces?

Hi Steve,

Many thanks for sharing the files and the issue! I have verified the behavior in 2025 and 2026. It does seem that the associative import workflow is broken. I need to check with the project team to understand the issue better.

Thanks again!
