iLogic: Multiple Instances of Part w/ Different Parameter values

Is it possible to have multiple instances of a part in an assembly with different parameter values?

In the example shown in the picture, I am trying to create a rule that sets the length of rod depending on where it is located inside of a flange (see picture for clarification). This will eventually be a "smart" assembly such that I can change the diameter of the flange and the rods respond accordingly. Is this possible using multiple instances of the same part, or will I have to create an iPart (which would then create new parts for each placement)? It would be nice if I could skip the extra work of creating an iPart for such a seemingly simple task. Right now though, it looks like the length for all instances is being dictated by the length of the last instance in the iLogic code ("Rod:1" is center working out to "Rod:7" at the furthest from center) - I do seem to remember that the parameter for a part is set to whatever is last stored in memory, so that would make sense.

I know this is kind of a basic setup which I am sure anyone with experience in iLogic has done many times. How would you go about this? Any guidance would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Inventor parts are all the same. Sorry.

To have two different parameter values, you will need two different parts.

Could you fake it with an assembly cut?

So you know about renaming part names in the browser?

Thanks for the response. Yes, I thought about just doing a cut. I suppose that would work for this particular case, but this is also kind of an exercise in iLogic for me.

I do remember something about the ability to rename parts in the browser, but I'm not too familiar with how that works exactly (still fairly new to Inventor switching from SW). Is that kind of a "shortcut" way of creating a "save-as-copy" part or something? If so, does it save only internally to the assembly? Or does it create a new part file in my project folder? Renaming in the browser is kind of a foreign concept to SW users lol.

Thanks again for the help.

Hi there,

Re-naming in the browser just re names the part reference in the browser - sorry 😉

Here's a reference as to why you might do that with iLogic.

There are many ways to copy a part/assembly in Inventor, so many that I wrote a whole blog post on it!

Here's a link to that too.

Please feel free to post back if you have any specific questions.
