idw/drawing showing up in assembly after placing component

Hello guys,

I'm reporting this b/c this bug / glitch has happened to me twice now (months apart) and each time I'm completely lost on what is causing the problem. Most likely a glitch but I doubt we'll be able to figure it out b/c I can't share files & I have a workaround solution. But that solution tells me it won't show up for you guys the same way either b/c it could be a fluke.

Workaround: Close Inventor and get files from Vault, forcing an overwrite and then reopening the Assembly you were in.

Steps to cause:

I simply placed the master iFactory / iAssembly file and the program thought long and hard about it. It updated or regenerated (I'm never quite sure what it does before I can pick something in the iAssembly table.) Then I click to place it and it thinks so more and the result was the iAssembly with 1 of the leg's idw (drawing sheet 1) showing up right in the middle of the assembly model. Another leg with different files did the same thing.

Previously this occurred on something else but I don't have the evidence. The drawing shows up at the origin.

I was also having a problem where Inventor wanted to update all files, regenerate all files for nearby models while I was trying to place the component & that stopped it from being placed. I even tried Deferring Updates to prevent it. It didn't really help. And by this point, after loading & failing for 30 minutes and it asking to save files constantly. I was getting quite annoyed and just wanted it to at least place 1 object. Once it placed, I tried a few updates and Vault browser>Right Click>Refresh and Get Revisions but nothing helped. So I quit the program & did what I explained in the Workaround above.

(I'm posting this just in case this happens for someone else and they also didn't find any solutions online.)

Inventor: Model States is not a replacement for iParts / iAssemblies. It does not have all the same features yet and does not communicate well with our large currently in use libraries. 😞 https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/inventor-ideas/model-state-support-tabulated-parts-list/idc-p/11360616

Hi Noah,

The behavior is certainly wrong. It could be graphics related. I vaguely remember seeing this issue 10 years ago but this is the first time recently. I think you may want to make sure all critical Windows updates are installed and the graphics driver is updated. Go to Inventor -> Tools -> App Options -> Hardware -> select "Performance" or "Quality" mode. Also make sure Inventor.exe runs on the dedicated graphics card, not the embedded graphics card. You need at least 8GB graphical RAM.

Many thanks!

I haven't seen this for a long time, but I recall that it was due to a button on a 3D motion controller (3Dconnexion) set to activate an isometric view.  This command functioned as intended, even in a drawing where it made no sense.  The easy fix then was to use one of the other buttons to return it to the Front view.

Is it possible that this was inadvertently initiated by something like this?

@SBix26 I know what you're talking about. But only happens within the drawing interface. I'm not in the drawing interface. Example: Open a idw drawing, place a view of a 3D part or assembly. Press a button on the 3D motion space mouse to change view and you'll get a out of body like experience w/3D stuff in front of the paper. This little feature still works but doesn't hurt anything and you can just return like you said.

Instead this situation I'm having is happening inside an Assembly .iam model interface. I don't have any drawings open. It just happened again. (I'm going to look into what Johnson said to look at it.)

@johnsonshiue

  • Windows is up to date.
  • Inventor set to "Performance" Mode.
  • NVIDIA Quadro T2000 with Max-Q Design
  • Brought up NVIDIA Control Panel and found my Manage 3D settings>Program Settings>Select a program to customize>Inventor>Select the preferred graphics processor for this program> set to automatic... It was High-performance NVIDA processor. I'm switching it back now.
    (Didn't touch anything else)
  • Closed Inventor and reopened the assembly... The problem is still there.
  • Looking at the driver options. I have 555.99 installed by my IT. Looks like that's the "New Feature Branch Driver". Link...won't work, it's a results page... uhh, anyways there's another "New Feature Branch Driver" R565 U1 (566.03) version... Should I install that? I'm questioning that b/c the "New Feature Branch Driver" page says the following:
    "
What is a New Feature Branch Driver?

This driver provides access to new features, bug fixes, new operating system support, and other driver enhancements offered between Production Branch releases. Support duration for New Feature Branches is shorter than that for Production Branches. It has been tested for workstation environments with reduced product support, and is recommended only for those users who need specific features that are mentioned in the respective release highlights or release notes.
Formerly known as Quadro New Feature (QNF)."

I blurred it.I blurred it.

Hi Noah,

Please share the files that exhibit the behavior on a cloud drive of your choice. Grant access to me ([email protected]). I would like to understand the behavior better.

Many thanks!
