How to make wheel slide/rotate in V slot

Hey guys, I have spent almost whole day trying to make these two things join and slide/rotate on this aluminium extrusion but somehow I just can't find a correct way how to do it and it is starting to drive me mad...

Maybe some experts could help me with this? I am finally writing here because I have already searched youtube/internet for something similar, I found a tutorial for Fusion 360 but it doesn't really work with Inventor...

I have attached both files of extrusion and wheel

In a simple form - that's what you can do. Please see the attached IV2018 files.

Cheers,

Igor.

Using @IgorMir 's technique, here are your parts assembled (attached files are 2020 format).  I added a workplane to your rail part to define the middle of the t-slot, then constrained the XZ plane of the wheel to that workplane.  Then a Tangent constraint between one angled face of the wheel to angled face of the t-slot (see below).

Mate & Tangent ConstraintsMate & Tangent Constraints

Since you mentioned "slide/rotate", I also added a Rotation/Translation constraint so the wheel rolls as you drag it back and forth along the rail.  However, I was not able to get it to roll along the rail by driving either a position constraint or an angle constraint— not sure why.

I attached my assembly, and the rail component that I modified; I didn't modify the wheel, so didn't attach it here.

Hi Sam,

My take on it - either of the participating parts in the Transition Constraints set can only has one degree of freedom. If the Roller rotates - the bar has to slide. But the Roller cannot rotate and move along the groove using Transitional Constraints with the bar being stationary. Unless I overlook something obvious in there.

Cheers,

Igor.

@IgorMir The motion constraint works if I drag the roller with the mouse, but not if I push it by driving a mate constraint of the axis to the end face of the rail; nor driving an angular constraint of the wheel to the end face.

I don't know, Sam. Are you saying that when you drag the wheel on the screen - it rotates around its axis and slides along the groove? And the bar is stationary at that? I can't get that on my side.

Cheers,

Igor.

Yes, that's how it's working for me in 2020.

It is something new in IV2020, I guess.

I cannot get it in IV2018. Not that I really need it. I was playing with that just out of curiosity.

Cheers,

Igor.
