How to make BOM template & how to generate BOM in Drawings ??

Hello everyone,

I know its a very basic question, but I'm struggling with BOM in inventor.

Please see attached file first. I'm putting part number into the drawings but it shows in some other language.  I want two things:

1. how to make BOM template & save it for further use, and how to import it in new different different drawings.

2. How to generate BOM in drawings.

Thanks in advance.

You can Right Mouse Button over the parts list

Then you click on Edit Parts List and Styles, a new box will come up

Here you can go in and edit your columns, which columns you want...what you want to name your parts list etc ....

Hey Michael Davis,

Thanks for the reply. It helps me. I want to know that how to creat the BOM template in inventor, so that next time I make the drawing and I can directly call the BOM template, so I don't have to repeat these things again and again in each drawings I make.

Open your default IDW ....

do the Edit  Style ...

then go the Parts List..

and click New Style

Name it what you'd like and it'll be available in your default IDW template ..

Is there NOT a distinct difference between a Bill Of Materials (BOM) and a Parts List? Yes the BOM is interlinked to the Parts List but if there looked at side by side they serve totally different functions.

Sorry, but the information was not helpfull.  I'm trying to figure out how to change the default settings for the "BOM" parts list.  I was not successful in understanding your instructions.  There seems to be some steps missing.  I think I need instructions that would get me from the very beginning all the way to the end.

As it stands, I have to modify each and every BOM to reflect the columns that I need.  I also have to re-type portions of the "parts list" in the description column because I can not use the "description" column as is.  I tried to copy and paste to save some time, but the system does not let me doe that.  I can't seem to find help anywhere on line, so I am fairly frustrated right now.

Thank you for trying to improve things through feedback from customers.  I do appreciate it.

Were you ever able to find a solution to this? There doesn't appear to be a way to edit the default "BOM" so that every time you open an assembly, the columns you need are there.  It seems that the only way to get the desired columns is to add them manually in each assembly, which is a time sink.

Thanks in advance if you've found a solution to this.

Are you trying to modify the BOM editor in an assembly file or the Parts List in a drawing file?

Most of this thread has addressed the drawing Parts List function.

For the assembly BOM, have you tried opening your standard.iam template file (or whatever file you use as a template) and changing the BOM Editor columns there?  That should make all new assemblies show the new column settings.

I am not aware of a tool to push the changes from the assembly template file to existing assembly files.  ILogic might be able to help.

You are correct in that most this is in reference to the Parts list.  The original question author and I are both referring to the the BOM not the parts list.  And edit to the template will help with the future assemblies but will not help with the legacy.

See this forum post to see the entire scenario I am trying to piece together.

I suspect that you will need to write a custom VBA application to batch process your legacy files.

I agree, I was hoping that someone has done something similar and I could modify their code.  I am not a programmer so I would not be capable of creating something from scratch, but rather piece together something that others have created.
