What version of Inventor are you using and how are you bringing in your drawing into Inventor?  Are you using Inventor AnyCAD to do this?

Does this idea speak to what you are trying to do?  If so, then there is not currently any option in Inventor that offers that.  You can certainly cast your vote for this to promote it and add a comment to help the cause as well.

Hi! Have you tried DWG Underlay workflow? Start a new part -> Import -> select the dwg file -> pick a plane and the origin point to place the dwg geometry. Then create a sketch and you can use Project DWG Geometry command to project it dwg geometry to the sketch.

You can also right-click on the dwg underlay node in the browser -> Edit and change the visibility of layers.

Many thanks!
