How to export with decals along with geometry?

I have a ipt model with a decal applied to it. Ultimate goal is to convert it to an obj format so I can use it in a power point presentation(office 365 can do that now).

My issue is I don't know how to get to that point in the conversion process without loosing the decal image.

So far I've tried STEP, IGES, IPT and other format direct import into 3Ds Max and then from there to OBJ.

But then I realized STEP and IGES only contains geometry and no images.

Please help

Pretty sure decals are not supported in exports to neutral formats..

Can't you just use an image vs a 3d model?

Can the decal be created as model features instead? (All my screen printing is extruded text/shapes due to limitations with decals)

I want to use a 3D model in powperpoint because I can have the same model on two slides, with different view, and then I use a morph transition and then powerpoint moves the model automatically in 3D from one slide to another. It's a big WOW factor for presentations.

The other reason I need an OBJ model is embed it on our website.

The decal cannot be created as model features instead. I really wish I could though.

In one case I have a label with a color gradient and text on top also so it's very dificult to replicate that with model features.

You may be asking the tool to do something it's not really designed for.

When we find there's a need for a fully-baked UV-wrapped mesh model, we'll export the solid from Inventor (or Fusion) and use 3ds Max to apply the textures, decals, colors, etc. There's a TON of control and flexibility - and also another learning curve/skill set/tool. If you need this level of control, then be prepared to invest in learning the tool.

Blender is a free alternative to 3ds Max, with comparable features in many areas.

I also understand that PhotoShop allows painting of 3d models, though we've never tried it.

Thank you. I'll add my vote on there 🙂

Thanks, I was afraid that might be the only solution. I'm not familiar with 3DS so I guess I'll have to learn that, or Blender.

Thanks for the information. Much appreciated.
