How to engrave text and designs on a curved surface

The part (see JPEG attachment) has text and lines engraved on a curved surface (see PDF attachment). I have tried to create a workplane and I have tried converting the surface into a 3D sketch and 3D surface but was unsuccessful. How do I ENGRAVE the text and lines into curved surface (highlighted in the JPEG) of the part?

Create an offset surface just below the outside surface.

Then create a plane just above the exterior surface to place your sketched text on.

Then project that text as an extruded cut to the embedded surface.
