how to copy a subassembly

i have an assembly that has several subassemblies, one of them is the same as another, but i realized i need to change one but not the other, how can i copy all the parts of that assembly with new names but keeping them in the same folder and replace it in the assembly so i can change it without it affecting the other copy? i know how to do it the long manual way but there must be an easier way

The best tool for this is Vault Copy Design.  If you do not have Vault, then I would suggest Inventor Design Assistant.  Practice on a copy first, there are a couple of gotchas that can result from Design Assistant unless you know it well.  One is not copying and renaming all the idw or dwg files at the same time you rename parts and assemblies.

@Anonymous

My quick suggestion would be to save and replace one of the sub-assy and then open up that new sub-assembly and save/replace the components within that sub-assembly.

I agree that Vaults copy design would be the best method.  If Vault is not an option, another suggestion would be to use the pack and go tool to another directory and weed out the parts you don't need to keep the ones you do.

that worked pretty well, the only problem i have with it is there isn't a "save and replace all" option, since the assembly i'm copying have a few duplicate parts, so i had to replace the rest manually, but they aren't super complicated assemblies so it wasn't so bad, thanks

Hello @Anonymous I think that Johnson answered your question in the Ask Anything thread so just posting back here for others to benefit. Try to keep discussions in one place to avoid confusion and repeating answers.

"Hi! Yes, this is called Copy Design workflow. If you use Vault, Vault has a Copy Design command. If you don't use Vault, there are two options.

Option 1: Start up Inventor without opening any file -> Tools -> iLogic Design Copy -> follow the dialog flows.

Option 2: Use Design Assistant (go to All Programs -> Autodesk -> Autodesk Inventor Pro xxxx -> Design Assistant ->) to open the assembly and apply Copy action.

Many thanks!"
