How to convert a dwg file to a 3D inventor part?

I imported a dwg object into my part file. I intend to project it to obtain a 3D part but that's not working at all. Its almost like the dwg object is just read only. It looks like a bunch of wires.

Looks like a surface mesh model. There is a Mesh Modeler tool. Probably take much longer to find and install.

 

It would be easier just to model it from start in Inventor. Extrude a Hex in both direction located at the Origin Point. Revolve the top stepped body.  Do the Revolver-Cut to create the rounded flanks of the Hex Body. Mirror it to the other side and add your chamfers. Unless there is some special detail work on the inside that's not showing, this should be modeled in less than a minute.

 

You could even start with a Hex Nut for your main body if it follows standards for fasteners.

Hi! Purely based on the image, I think the source dwg file contains Faces or Mesh. You bring in the file as DWG Underlay. The Underlay workflow is a reference workflow. The geometry is for viewing purpose or projecting to sketch. But, it does not apply to Faces or Mesh. Your best bet to convert it to a solid part is the following.

1) Open the dwg file in AutoCAD. Make sure you understand the measurement unit. Is it inch or mm?

2) Export it to STL or OBJ from AutoCAD.

3) Start Inventor -> Open -> set file filter to STL or OBJ -> select the file -> click on Options -> make sure the unit is set correctly. The mesh will be imported.

4) If you are a subscriber, you can go to Autodesk App Store to download Mesh Enabler for Inventor for free. Install the tool and use it to convert the mesh geometry to body geometry. Lastly, stitch it to a solid.

 

Or, you can simply use the mesh as a reference to recreate the solid body in Inventor.

Hi,

You mentioned using the mesh as a reference to make a solid body in inventor. How would I go about that? When I import the drawing into inventor, I can't apply any commands to it.

-dwgunits command in AutoCAD indicates that the document units are inches, but measuring the distance is about 41.5, so I suspect that the intended units for the document should have been set to millimeters in AutoCAD.

 

What version of Inventor are you using?

2019 version Attached.

In that case - you can examine the feature tree in the file that I attached and see how I converted it to an Inventor part.

That's exactly what I want but from the feature tree, I still can't understand how you projected or inserted the DWG mesh into the sketch 2. I tried that and it didn't work.

Hi Tola,

 

I took a quick look at the dwg file in AutoCAD. It consists of polylines and meshes. You can export it to STL or OBJ. Then import it back to Inventor (make sure you set import unit to mm). If you are a subscriber, you can go to Autodesk App store to download Mesh Enabler to free. You can convert the mesh to composite surface. Then stitch it to a solid body.

However, I think you might be better off simply recreating the part in Inventor from scratch. You can find the dimensions with some measurement. The advantage of recreating in Inventor is that the geometry will be precise. And, you can easily edit and modify the part.

Just a crazy idea: head over to the Swagelok site and see if they have something a little more Inventor-friendly.
