How do i keep the flange from eating material on the bend?

FLANGE CREATION.JPG

FLANGE EATING MATERIAL.JPG

I need to retain the full width along the arc section, at least most of it. so that I can weld it to another part, but when I add the flange it eats material alond the entire arc length. I wouldnt mind a bend relief in the arc section or the flat section, but i dont see anywhere in the dialogue box to do so, and it didn't work when I tried to use a cut to do it "manually"

I thought I could add the file here, but for some reason its not taking it.

ok, so I can use the offset to do it, but is there a more...automatic way to do it?

Oh I see now, this doesn't normally happen, it's because you have the curve on it.

Doesn't happen if you have a straight edge bent. Wonder if this a bug, limitation of the software, or there's another reason for it.

Accepted solution

FLANGE S1_LI.jpg

FLANGE S2_LI.jpg

FLANGE S3.JPG

This is how i fixed it, its a little more "change the parameters until its right" and less "click a button and your done" but not too time intensive i suppose

Another choice:

Use an unfold feature to flatten the arc.  Add a cut feature to manually create the bend relief.  Add the flange.  Add a re-fold feature to restore the arc.

It sounds plausible, but I did try to create my own bend relief cut initially and it didnt work. But I did not unfold it first...   adding an offset in the flange dialogue box actually seems like the same thing you are describing but with less steps, and with the advantage of creating the relief cut for you automatically

It depends on where you need the relief cut and how long you want your flange.

I'm glad the offset works for you.
