How can i flat pattern an element that is a section of a cone in Inventor, so I can afterwards cut it with laser, adapt and fit the original curved element.

So i designed an ufo that needs to be covered with wood. The idea was to cut that pattern in cnc and then curve the wood.

This is one of the resulting "pizza slices" .

When I try to flat Pattern and get a 2d drawing of it for cut purposes. It will show me this.

The part doesn't look flattened in any part of the process....

Thanks a lot!

Is there any way to do this in Autocad also? I was told only way to do properly was in Inventor, with sheet metal, which makes total sense. I'm quite new to Inventor. Used in the past, but never with curvy surfaces.

Attaching ipt file for review.

Best!

As long as your sheet metal properties are setup correctly and modeled correctly it'll work.

Cone Flat-01.jpg

Your part is 4.54 mm thick, sheetmetal is set to 0.5mm.
