Hole positioning from a centre plane using Hole Linear Placement feature

Morning all

Does Inventor allow me to use a plane for a x-y Linear hole placement reference if l am wanting to come off of a centre plane rather than come of an edge when using the Hole - Placement - Linear insertion method? It's just that, to me at least, if l want to use a centre plane as my datum rather than an edge l have to do it by sketch creation and project the geometry of the centre plane onto my hole face in order to have reference. I could also do some arithmetic to determine how far the plane is from the outer edge but then my datum plane would no longer be from the centre. Perhaps l'm just being lazy and not wanting to draw a sketch but for sake of 1-off hole (which the Hole - Placement - Linear method works very well for when you have an edge reference) l just feel having to draw a sketch is extra effort that needn't be done if it could be avoided. Perhaps this method already exists and l just haven't found the method of using it? Failing that perhaps it's an idea that should be put forward to the Submit Idea Committee for evaluation: any thoughts anyone? Cheers

Hi! In Linear placement method, you are indeed limited to selecting straight edges from the target body. The other option is to create a sketch and insert sketch points and constrain or dimension the points to the projection of the center plane.

As Johnson says you do need a sketch to dimension from the projected workplane.

Starting in Inventor 2019 this workflow is a little easier.  The “linear” (and “concentric”) placement types now automatically create a sketch, and you can transition in/out of the sketch using “breadcrumbs” on the Hole panel.

Cheers Johnson. It's just that l want to avoid having to do a sketch is all. Although Tom Sturvent below has explained  that Inventor 2019 has a feature to make this a tad easier so we just need to get the upgrade installed.......
