Hatch Setup & Edit in IDW

Hi all

Just want to find out the most efficient way of setting up and editing hatch patterns in idw's in inventor.

Over the years, I have usually just accepted default hatch pattern and edited singly any new ones I want.

But when there are lots of sectioned areas to change, this becomes a bit tedious.

Lately I have been trying a few things, see attached PDF's.

I have now set up hatch patterns, and even layers to get the colour, because

the custom hatches don't allow colours.

Read the pdf's and comment. I would like to hear how everybody else deals with this

Thanks

I know how hatch patterns are made. Thanks for the links.

If anyone is interested I have some tutorials I wrote in 2005 on Creating Custom Hatch Patterns and Installing Custom Hatch Patterns.(for AutoCAD)

These were based on an earlier version of autocad, so I don't know if anything has changed with Custom Hatch Patterns, as I haven't done

anything on custom hatch patterns since then.

If there is somewhere I can upload them, I am willing, they are word files (1 MB & 170KB), I don't know whether I can load them here?

What I am actually looking for is a nice quick efficient way of making the right hatch patterns

appear in the idw (ie wood for wood, steel for steel, concrete for concrete) without having a standard hatch pattern at a 1:1 scale

appear in every single section of every single component of every single view, and then having to edit each and every instance.

In my PDF's attached I have explained in detail how I use to do it, and how I go about it now.

Hi Mike,

I am sorry I may misunderstood your request. From time to time, I do have human multi-threading errors. Please bear with me. I thought this could be done already via Material Hatch Pattern Defaults in Styles Editor -> Standard -> find the tab on the right. There you could load a part with various materials. Then assign different hatch pattern for each material. Now, when you create section views of the parts, the correct hatch pattern will appear. Please take a look at the following Help document.

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/inventor-products/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2018...

If it does not work for you, could you provide an example showing me the behavior.

Many thanks!

This looks like what I want to do.

ie assign a hatch pattern to a material which is assigned to a part,

therefore the part automatically gives the correct hatch pattern

when sectioned in an idw.

Scaling maybe, has to be done individually per view?

I will investigate and let you know

Hi

If I understand you need to use two or three type of hatch styles. Let say name is Wooden, Steel and Concrete Hatch

If you want to use wooden hatch style 40 times and rest of two styles very less time then have you tried to make the wooden hatch style as default hatch style?? Please see below image in Style and Standard Editor.

What I am suggesting is you need to define different hatch styles and layers which you already done and just set default hatch which you mostly use.

Also if need to use it again and again in each drawing please do not forget the save the Style Manager with this setting. I think you know this setting!!

I am still investigating.

it looks like I can achieve what I want with a whole bunch of settings,

like object default, layers, default standard, assigning a hatch to a material etc.

To those who contributed, thanks, I will give kudos.

There was however no definitive answer given,

so I will not be posting "accept as solution"

Even when assign a hatch pattern to a material, it still doesn't

help when you have a section with a whole bunch of areas

where you either have to change the hatch scale or the colour

or both. You still have to edit each one separately, if you select

more than 1 the edit button is greyed.

I really do wish for the autocad "paint properties"

command here. Either that or allow multiple selections of

areas so they can all be changed at once to required scale

and colour.

If there is not another existing solution, which there doesn't appear to be,

and if anybody agrees with me that this would be useful,

I will submit it as an IDEA

Hi Mike,

I thought my suggestion would work. It does not sound like the case. Do you mind sharing a simple example? I really want to understand this request better.

Many thanks!

yes your suggestion has solved some of what I wanted,

but not everything that I wanted to achieve.

It could still  be that it is possible in inventor.

There are still some areas I haven't investigated yet.

It will take me a while to come up with a document I

can post here.

Like I said, this is all done in my lunch hour, and spare

time at home with my own software, which is why

my posts are all delayed and take time.

I don't know whether it is different in your part of the

world, and whether employees would be allowed to

do this in company time?

Okay finally

Still no solution to changes numerous hatches all at once, in terms of scale and colour.

This is adding significant extra time in getting my drawings out

I would like to add the idea of either

1. being able to match properties of hatch patterns (like in autocad)

 or

2. being able to to a multiple select without the edit button being greyed out,

so that you can edit a whole pile of hatches at one go to a single setting

but the 1st idea already exists, and is the one I prefer, although both would solve the problem,

therefore I will just add my vote.

See attached for a full explanation of what I have tried and what I have seen on

the idea forum
