Graphics problem specific to certain assemblies

The graphics in Inventor looks strange in certain assemblies (see attached figure). Any tips on what the cause of this could be?

I've tried the following with no improvement:

  • Changing the Graphics Settings in the Hardware tab in the Application options to quality and performance.
  • Disabling express mode.
  • Restarting the application and workstation

Because it's only for one assembly, are there document level graphic settings to be adjusted?

@george0621

Hello, I would check the lighting settings for this assembly and see how they compare to others.  Has someone inadvertently made a change to the lighting?

@CGBenner

Hi, thank you for the response. I've compared the lighting settings, it looks like there hasn't been any change unfortunately. Are there any more lighting settings to check apart from the "Active lighting style"?

Hi George,

This looks like that components are very far away from the origin. Please measure the distance between a vertex on one component and the assembly origin.

Many thanks!

Hi John, that worked! Thank you very much! Do you know why being away from the origin causes this?

@george0621

Hi George, it probably has to do with the distance that the default lights are from the origin, so as you get farther away it is creating "shadows".

Hi! Inventor is a true-scaled modeler. It means that the geometry created in the model space is true to the size regardless of measure unit. If something measures 1 km, it is indeed 1 km in length. The graphics system has to represent the geometry to high accuracy regardless of the size. However, as geometry is located further away from the origin, the amount of resource required to display it in high fidelity becomes much greater. With a fixed hardware resource, the fidelity will go down accordingly.

Many thanks!
