From a 2D Inventor drawing, be able to change the name of the basic 3D model without having to recreate all the 2D drawing.
Why:
When updating the 3D drawing, the 2D drawing automatically updates => OK
But if we save the basic model with a revision index, drawing 2d does not allow to "reread" the 3D model to be corrected or revised. The 2D drawing must be completely recreated.
Currently there is no way to index the 3D model and keep a link with a 2D pattern drawings.

As I understand it, you want a new copy of both model and drawing, so you can retain the old and new revisions.  Is that correct?  If so, then there are already at least 4 existing methods to do what you want.

  1. Vault.  I assume you're not using Vault, or you wouldn't have this question in the first place.  It would retain the old revisions automatically, so this problem would already be resolved.
  2. Design Assistant.  Run Design Assistant on the drawing.  Set it to copy the drawing, assembly, parts, etc. as necessary depending on how much you need to archive.  Change the names as appropriate.  The Design Assistant will fix all the links between the new files automatically.
  3. Replace Model Reference.  Copy and rename the files manually as you have been doing.  In the new revision copy of the drawing, use the Replace Model Reference command to redirect the drawing to use the new model file instead of the old one.
  4. File Name Games.  Copy and rename the files manually as you have been doing.  Except this time, also rename the old model.  When you open the new drawing, the link to the model will be broken due to the file name change.  Instead of picking the old model that it is actually looking for, pick the new one.  Then you can change the old model file name back to what it is supposed to be.  This is the old method that was commonly used before the Replace Model Reference command was added.

Sorry about my English…

Thank you very much for your response, which meets my needs.

Yes, being alone, I do not use VAULT and I have never used the "design
assistant" that I did not know.

In fact in the drawings I only used "place the views" and "annotate" so I
was looking for the "replace reference" command in the wrong place.

And since it takes a start to everything I expect the 2020 French version of
the Factory to follow and I will try VAULT.

Thank you again for your quick response.

Great post, @jtylerbc, really thorough and helpful. Wish I could give that a kudo!

I'm asking the moderator to move this to the regular forum so it can be marked as a solution and hopefully help others as well.

Thanks to the moderator for moving.

@DZIKOWSKI, if you could mark jtyler's answer as the solution that would be great.

Throwing out another idea to copy your models besides using design assistant...   May want to look at iLogic Design Copy:  https://synergiscadblog.com/2014/09/23/copy-files-easily-with-ilogic-design-copy-even-without-ilogic...
