Frame generator miter joint (combined cut)

Hello,

 

I have two different sections meeting at the sloping corner at 122 deg horizontally and about 7 deg vertically ("profile1.png" and "profile2.png) as shown in picture "generated frame.png". To join those to sections correctly I need to apply what is called a combined-cut (attached a hand sketch "CombinedCut.png") what is basically a miter joint turned at an angle ( splayed miter joint).

I'm using frame generator for this task and miter function produces an incorrect result (shown in picture "Capture1.png").

Is there a way to make this kind of joint (I'm using Inventor 2018) using frame generator ?

If not - what is the best way make this joint?

To use Frame Gen, the profiles need to be Authoring as a custom profile within the Fram-Gen program. I've attached a file how to publish components to CC for use with Frame Gen.

Blair,

 

Thanks a lot for the attachment, but that is not exectly what I'm after. I was asking whether it's possible to make a miter joint on two planes. Unless I missed that part where I have to enter a value in that property table to force miter at an angle.

hi @Anonymous,

 

I don't have access to 2018 for a couple of hours but you will get better results if you attach a Pack and Go of the assembly containing the skeleton and frame generator assembly.

 

Remove everything else from it (or create a new test assembly for us) and use File / Save As / Pack and Go and share the zip with us, please.

I created a new, clean setup, that replicates a scenario I'm struggling to deal with. hopefully there is a way to accomplish this joint without manually editing and constraining every single time...

Using this opportunity I would like to raise another question retarding this particular assembly.

You might notice that GU sub assemblies used as a path for Frame generator are not fully constrained together. Both of them are grounded. I was unable to figure out how can I properly constrain them so I added a rotational joint, than deleted it moved them apart and grounded. That is close but not correct.

What constrains should I apply in this kind of situation to achieve a desirable and correct result result?

The items within the Frame-Gen as positioned and controlled by the controlling Sketch file and the Frame-Gen control window. I've never used a separate work-plane to trim/mitre an Frame-Gen member. You can try by placing a Work Plane at your desired angle and location and use it as your Trim/Mitre surface rather than another Frame-Gen member.

 

This is why you see only grounded items within the Frame-Gen and no constraints.

@blair,

Unfortunately Frame generators miter command wont allow to select a work plane instead of second frame member, so that does not work.

I found a work around creating a shrink wrap and then sculpting solids around a work plane.

It would be great tho if frame generators Miter function could do a mater at a different angle other than 45deg. just by imputing an angle.
