Folded plate drilled after folding

Hi all

I am doing a sheet metal part.

Drawn up the flat plate then folded it.

When I flat pattern this it goes back to the original plate before I folded it.

Now this part only gets drilled after folding so I don't want the holes to appear on the flat pattern.

When I now add the holes to the folded part and flat pattern it again, the holes are there.

I only want the holes in folded part not the flat pattern.

How do I do this in this one file?

I don't want to make 2 files and do the derive etc etc.

Is this possible?

okay

sort of solved

filled in the holes on the flat pattern itself,

then switched to folded and the holes obviously were still there.

Switching back to flat pattern the holes are not there, as any changes you 

make to the flat pattern, don't appear on the folded model.

 

Is this the way to do it, are there any better ways

Hi, why don't you use a weldment .iam?

There you can use Machining to create the hole (not in the flat pattern).

1-create weldment.. add holes there..

2-Create assembly..add assembly level feature there.. same as 1 basically..

3-Create an ipart.. One member with the hole.. one without

4-Derive.. you mentioned this already.. just adding it to the list of solutions.

5-Depending on your needs you can simply remove the holes linework/curves from the flat pattern file/drawing.

Why are you drawing a flat plate and then folding it? Model a finished part and let Inventor to look after the flat pattern.

Hello @MikeKovacik4928,

 

Depending on the workflow, I typically use one of the first three points that @mcgyvr suggested. 

 

You should model your sheet metal part without the holes. Then, when you use that file in whatever type of assembly, that's when you should add the holes (which has been stated). Then, all of your drawing details about said holes should be shown in your manufacturing assembly drawing, while your sheet metal part is a component drawing with details about the bend and overall length x width x thickness...

That is what I would normally do if it was a new design.

However these parts I am doing are already being manufactured.

There are existing 2d autocad drawings

Now I am redoing everything in 3D inventor.

Therefore I am taking the flat plate that they have been using and folding it to get what it actually comes out to.

To get it folded to what it actually comes out to, I just adjust the KFactor till it gives me the correct folded dimension.

The odd one where that still doesn't  give the correct folded dimension (adjusting the KFactor from 0 all the way to 1)

I am actually going to  physically check and measure.

I don't know, Mike;

If I was given a task like yours - I would call the shot. Fudging old files to suit new requirements is not my cup of tea, really. Such a practice usually ends up in a disaster.

I going to have to agree to disagree

I am not fudging old files, I am making new files in Inventor to replace the old autocad files and while I am doing it,

I am checking the actual physical measurements of the components to make sure they 

actually comply with the drawing.

The inventor sheet metal software has different ways of unfolding the bent up part.

What  I am doing is starting from the actual flat pattern we use, folding it up using the inventor sheet metal settings, to get the actual folded shape we get, and then if that still doesnt work, double checking on the actual physical measurements to make sure they comply with the drawing.

Hi Mcgyvr

 

I am tending to go away from my original idea of having the folded  plate with the holes and the development

without the holes as one part in one file.

The reason is that the folded plate with no holes can be used to make more than one part ie differing patterns of holes. Therefore I am now tending to one of your ideas of having the folded part with no holes with its flat pattern, as one part.

Then the folded parts with their different hole patterns as different  parts.

Also with the part numbers, the folded plate with no holes can have a separate part number to the folded plates with their different patterns.

I am tending towards number 4 (derive) as I think this would probably be the simplest.
